He called a press conference, and using the spotlight that has been shining on him the last several days, turned the occasion into a campaign stump speech. Actually, it was more of a sound bite as I'm sure he knew the national media wouldn't stay tuned longer than what amounted to a free campaign commercial. MSNBC cut away immediately when they saw what was happening.
They say there's no such thing as bad publicity as long as they spell your name right, and Akin milked that adage for what it's worth today. He spent some credibility this afternoon with this stunt, and I'm sure the media will be wary in the future. Any pressers from here on will likely be on a tape delay to avoid his exploitation of free camera time.
I noticed something else today. If Akin was sitting at the end of a bar in street clothes babbling on about what he sees as the good and bad in America, it would be hard to tell that he wasn't just some racist factory worker with a GED. There's no political charisma at all about him, and I don't know how he found his way to the national stage. I'm not even sure how he'd find his way to the men's room.
My apologies to racist factory workers with GEDs everywhere, but Ronald Reagan he ain't.
