By Charles Apple
Heres one thing I do not want to see on page one tomorrow: Arguably the most famous picture taken in the history of mankind.
One reason I dont want to see it: Thats not Neil. Thats Buzz Aldrin.
The second reason I dont want to see it: Because NASA manipulated that photo before it was released to the public, back in 1969.
Evidently, Neil shoots pictures the same way my wife does: He cuts off peoples heads. Heres the actual, unedited frame of that picture, which NASA calls AS11-40-5903:
. . .
In fact, if youre hoping to use a picture of Armstrong on the moon tonight: Rots of Ruck to you. Armstrong and Aldrin only walked on the moon for about two-and-a-half hours that night in 1969. Most of the time, Armstrong carried the primary camera. Aldrin carried a camera but was assigned to shoot specific, technical things.

(16,230 posts)or why there should be Moon pictures on page 1 tomorrow.
Then I clicked on your link. Neil Armstrong is dead!
I don't even know what to say. I saw him walk on the Moon, and now he's dead.

(4,982 posts)And 82 isn't that old. Apparently some complications from cardiovascular work. Hadn't realized or didn't remember that he had the camera during their moonwalking thus no decent photos of him on the moon. I'll never forget those words though. They played them over and over and over after that. Very proud time in our nation's history.

(11,064 posts)Here's another of Aldrin taken years later which probably amused Armstrong and the others.
Aldren is elderly guy in the sport's jacket.

The story of the design and their learning to use that custom Hasselblad camera is a good one for photo geeks.
