Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo, OK...gather 'round, folks. Time for a huddle.
I've been a member of DU for eleven (fa chrissakes) years. Been through the aftermath of 2000, and 2002, and the wonder that was 2004, and then 2006, and then 2008, and then 2010...right here. 9/11, Afghanistan, Shock & Awe, the tsunami, Katrina, the BP blowout...on and on, here.
Home base, such as it is. In those election periods, and through all the bad times, I have made friends who would walk through fire for me...and I have made enemies who would not piss on me if I were on fire in front of them.
That's how it is, for me, anyway. Through it all, however, has been DU.
Period, end of file.
The RNC starts tomorrow (kinda), and on Tuesday (for reals).
Over the next 100 hours, every television, radio, internet news site, ham radio and sub-woofer between the East and West time zones will be hemmoraging half-Nazi fascist right-wing psycho bullshit on a level heretofore unknown upon this continent. No, seriously...between the whores shilling the shit and the vipers who own the "mainstream" news paying the whores to do the shilling, you're about to experience a river of mind-numbing garbage of such mass and density that it will bend the very light.
Don't let it get to you.
Don't let it get to you.
Don't let it get even close to you.
It is going to be a long, ugly week.
Come here for your therapy. DU is the cure, the elixir, a truth I have discovered and re-discovered time and time again when presented with a detonation of nonsense like what we are about to behold.
Get ready.
Be here.

(81,304 posts)I found my way here a few miserable months into 2001 via a site called "Resident Bush," that led me to Buzzflash, that then led me to DU. I was as relieved to find all the people of like mind here then as I am now. It's been my refuge and my oasis. When I felt so alone and even persecuted by the public zeitgeist, at least in my thinking, I always knew that at least there's DU and I can find people who agree with me.
It's given me strength, support, resolve, ideas, comfort, companionship, solidarity, inspiration, education, an expanded mindset, a better-informed viewpoint, and a much more involved and activist position from which to work and try to contribute.
I LOVE DU!!! It'll be my oasis yet again for the rest of this campaign, at the very very least. Whaddya think - if Obama gets reelected that in his last two years they try to impeach him?

(41,984 posts)I know that's not easy; I get pulled in myself. But we have to recall that the DNC gets the second slot, which will leave a far more lasting impression on those who pay attention. We have to survive this with some cohesion so we can make the best use, together, of the boost the Democratic Convention, and particularly the debates, can give us.
Breathe, guys. It's a distortion, not reality. We can beat them, especially if they keep talking.

(212 posts)This website is my sanity! Seriously, it is. I went here after Al Gore won the presidency and it was given to W. I was here during the insanity of the Republican chicken hawks starting a war that was based on lies as most of the media and the American public allowed themselves to become brainwashed. I was here after I volunteered during the Kerry/Edwards campaign and the lost, an election I still don't believe because of the voting machine fraud going on. I was here after the amazing awesome election of Barack Obama and I am still here when the daily frustrations of extremism on the right and how they try to suppress the African American vote, take over the choices over women, deny the rights of people to be legally married, no matter who they love. I come here after I here the insanity of thinking our President's mother somehow, 51 years ago deliberately created an illegal birth certificate because she had the psychic ability to predict her 1/2 African American baby boy would one day be the leader of the free world. I come here when I am so frustrated over the tax laws that keep padding the 1% and the Republican fairy dust talk about the great idea of 'trickle down economics', an idea that didn't work one darn bit when Reagan tried it and believe me I know! I was in the military during his so called wonderful presidency. And now I am here because it is a place that is authentic, inspiring, safe, and a place where reality lives and where the 'real' reason our constitution was written in the first place. I am hear today because I believe the liberals and progressives in our country want freedom, fairness and hope for all of our citizens!!

I love DU, too, and it's been like a refuge from the not-really-liberal media and all of the bigoted obscenities I read in YouTube comments and on Yahoo Answers. On YouTube and YA, I simply was fed up with all of the bashing of Obama and liberals in general, and folks acting as if Ron Paul is some god (believe me--there are a ton of Paulbots on both of those sites). And I had enough of getting trolled by racially-stereotypical insults on YouTube comments, so here I am.

I retired about a year ago and moved 300 miles south to St. George, Utah. Now, I have a lot more free time to spend at DU and other progressive/left leaning websites. I also watch Bill Press and Stephanie Miller on Current TV in the mornings. Having lived in Utah my entire life, I've had to put up with a good deal of BS from Mormons and from Republicans. In addition, there are many mind numbingly stupid people in this area who will say and do everything they're told even if it goes against their own best interest. (84,711 posts)Thanks, Will .....but, DU isn't the only place for "news" or companionship these days....although there are some good stalwart folks who continue to try to be Progressive Democrats who find this site a valuable contribution to the Democratic Party and the policies we Dems have always hoped our Party stood for for decades from FDR through "all the troubles."
Some of us feel that things are so dire going forward that our news is filtered here, and so we seek "Alternative Sources." This is not to say that the "bonding" we here had and still hope to find on "Democratic Underground" is not worthwhile. It's just that many of us have had to "expand our menu" of sites during this terrible time of fracturing of our government and disillusionment with the choices we have to go to to find information that allows our continuing enlightenment.
I give you "hugs" for the old times....it's been a long journey and always good to see those "old battlers" (many who were so very young at the time) here still and fighting...each in our own way for Truth and Justice.
