Ever witness a mob hit? I have

My late father who loved betting on the ponies and I were traveling north on the Tri-State Tollway in my car on our way to Arlington Race Track on June 24, 1981. As we came up to the Hinsdale Oasis we noticed a Black Mercedes on the other side of the tollway coming down the entrance ramp to enter onto the tollway going south. The Mercedes got about half way down the ramp when the bomb went off. The entire roof separated and came off of the top of the car and went into the sky as far as we could see. The rest of the Mercedes continued rolling down the ramp in flames. About that time my father and I realized whatever was left of the driver must have been stuck to the bottom of the Mercedes roof we watched go into the sky and out of sight. About a mile later my dad who was kind of witty said to me, "Well Donnie, just goes to show that you really can make it to heaven in a Mercedes." I remember him laughing.

11. Michael Cagnoni

Cagnoni, 37, was a well-to-do trucking executive who ran afoul of the mob and knew it. He had hired a bodyguard, carried a gun and wore a bulletproof vest for a while. Still, someone planted a sophisticated bomb under the seat of his Mercedes. It detonated June 24, 1981, shredding his car and killing Cagnoni as he pulled onto the Tri-State Tollway in Hinsdale.

They don't splatter someones brains across the Tri-State Tollway during rush hour without there being one hell of a message being sent to someone.

That is for damn sure.

3. No, but I called in the aftermath

I got off the trolley and started to walk up toward the hospital I was working in that night. As I passed some big white car, I noticed a smell I'd smelled once before and it was very obvious what it was. When I got to work, I called in the car's location. Sure enough, there was a decomposing goomba in the trunk.

Whitey Bulger was still in town, could have been some of his work. Or it could have been Ping On or Dog Posse or any of the other drug gansters in town. I guess identification took a while because there was never much in the paper.

his brother shot somebody 9 times in the front room of the house. His mother screamed at him and said something to the effect that "your father, God rest his soul, would be so ashamed! Nine bullets! It shoulda took you two at most!"

The way he told the story I had a hard time not believing him. That was 20 years ago and I still suspect the story was true.

but witnessed a hit on a basketball court in one of the projects of NYC. The kid I was dropping off seemed to think nothing about it. The NYPD nailed the guy and I understand he just got out of prison.

8. Although I didn't see it, that one happened not very far from here:

Canada

Hells Angels Quebec president Maurice Boucher organized "puppet clubs" to persuade local Montreal, Quebec club Rock Machine controlled bars, and their resident drug dealers, to surrender their illegal drug business. Rock Machine resistance led to bloodshed. On July 14, 1994, two members of the Hells Angels' top puppet club entered a downtown motorcycle shop and shot down a Rock Machine associate. That was the beginning of the Quebec Biker war.[31]

That August, a Jeep wired with a remote-controlled bomb exploded killing a Rock Machine associate and an 11-year-old boy, Daniel Desrochers, who was playing in a nearby schoolyard. A month later, the first full Hells Angels member was shot to death entering his car at a shopping mall. Nine bombs went off around the province during his funeral.[31]

The war eventually ended with mass killings by the Hells Angels,[32] plus public outcry over the deaths of innocent bystanders[33] resulted in police pressure including the incarceration of over 100 bikers.[34]

Greedy assholes all. So glad the 'survivors' survive in jail... (ALL their assets taken away by newly-passed laws).

On television.

Edited to add: I wouldn't be telling jokes if I saw someone die. I'd probably say a prayer and be in shock.

12. Close. Shondor Birns got blown to the hereafter next door to our Union hall, at Christie's Lounge.

We used to go there for a drink after Union meetings.

Was going up Detroit Ave. to my girl friend's house in Lakewood after working downtown that Saturday and saw what looked like chicken fat hanging from the chain-link fence behind the parking lot.

That stuff was parts of him.

I saw Birns a few times at the place I worked back then, a wholesale meat purveyor.

He owned or had interests in various bars and restaurants over the years that we delivered to, and he was friends with the owner.

He was always a nice guy to us employees.

There was one Hell of a bombing war in Cleveland in the early seventies among the various mob factions.

This was around the same time as your hit...he was murdered in the parking lot of the "Purple Hotel" in Lincolnwood...a short time after I was married at said hotel. We joked that the mob was probably casing out the hotel that night.

I've seen a lot of mindblowing (and other blowing) stuff on the expressways around Chicago but never saw a car blow up. We had several prominent Mafia families (of course we never used that word except in private company) in my neighborhood. A family friend lived down the block from Sam Giancanna on the far west side...there were always body guards outside the house but my friend said they had the best candy on the block...
