TAMPA - The reintroduction of Mitt Romney to the American public began in earnest Sunday with the Republican nominee and his, wife, Ann telling us they like to shop at Costco.
I take that back. They both "love" Costco, revealed Mrs. Romney, wrapping themselves in that great bastion of middle-class American consumerism.
(snip)
"We both love Costco," Ann Romney said as her husband sat there and smiled adoringly at her - not having much to say himself but notably not correcting her.
"It's got great produce," chimed in the former Massachusetts governor.

Mr. Sinegal will also be a speaker the the Democratic National Convention!
Go Jim! Go Obama!

(5,849 posts)I'm surprised Mittens didn't know this. If he and Ann wanted to seem like "one of us," you would think they would have given a nod to WalMart or Sam's Club.

(20,998 posts)...claiming Costco paid their employees too much and gave too much in benefits.
Sinegal always countered that Costco employees deserved a living wage, just like the people that shopped at Costco.

(8,646 posts)if you say, "A good part of the reason why we do as well as we do is people shop at Costco BECAUSE they know we treat our employees well." It's a big part of the reason I make an effort to shop there.

Reward? Learning how to go potty on the toilet, but we're STILL trying to encourage him not to be afraid of the toilet.

(8,646 posts)She was fine with #1, but refused to do #2 on the potty. So I tried the age-old method of bribing (she was my first I had to do that with and I have 4 kids) and started with 1 smartie. She looked at the one smartie and the look on her face was like - "is that it? Oh heck, this is not even worth it!" Even a handful wouldn't do it. It eventually took full-size chocolate bars (the big packs at Costco) and the odd toy to get her to go. But it worked. Good luck, he'll get it with time

I'm sure the groups would have preferred to pay bare minimum wage and offer no benefits, you know, something comparable to Wal-Mart.

Whatever they got from Costco will be long gone for their households once the convention is over...probably they'll give them to the maid and the valet...

(5,420 posts)I would think that if they even carried produce, it would make up a very small amount of their goods. Not the first thing I would think of to buy there.
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,719 posts)but I wouldn't call it a large selection. They have some vegetables and fruit in season, like raspberries and strawberries, and you can always get those wooden boxes of clementines. But if you want any real variety of produce you have to go to a regular grocery store. I think Ann was blowing it out her wazoo again. I would be very surprised if she has ever seen the inside of a Costco.

(5,420 posts)of all things for Rmoney to brag about at a Costco, I would not have thought produce would have been it if he had actually been to a Costco.

Whatever consultant scripted that for them, should have picked Sam's Club.
Meanwhile, their team of personal shoppers actually get their produce at Neiman Marcus.

(12,081 posts)It's obvious he has never stepped foot in a costco. First of all the produce is not that great. It's usually devoid of taste because it is picked too early. Secondly, can you just picture either one of them buying clothes from there and then standing in line outside to buy a hot dog?

(19,537 posts)That is one of the big problems with Costco, in that they have way too many right wing books and NO progressive books in their selection. I'm sure that the RNC and Romney would LOVE to exploit that crappy fact and show him buying some books by Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham or Bill O'Reilly, and not have to worry about thumbing through books from the other side.
I think this is why we should really put pressure on Costco ownership to at least offer books for us to buy there. I know it's likely because they get a better "deal" with the way that Republican books are distributed by throwing out tons of "overstock" out there that outfits like Costco tend to buy up to sell at lower prices.
But if we make sure they are aware that we as their primary customer base feel shortchanged when wanting to have some decent books to purchase, then perhaps they might respond, whereas some place like Sam's Club would obviously laugh at us if we tried to do the same thing there.

(5,810 posts)Just heard a clip this a.m. and was not listening closely but thought I heard her say that his shirt came from Costco and that they loved it and thought it was nice and comfortable. Or words to that effect? Is that right?
Does she REALLY want us to believe that they grabbed a basket and strolled through Costco and threw a items in the basket, including the shirt Mitt was wearing? Puh-leaz.
Will they say anything to try to relate to us common folk? And if they were going to do a shout out to warehouse shoppers, looks like they would have mentioned a big REPUBLICAN owner, more of the Walton Clan brand and not an Obama supporter. Don't any of their people research these things before they put them in the script??? Have they not heard of Google??
