3. Like lots of people he does not go by

his legal first name. It's incredibly common. I know a surprising number of people for whom the name I address them by is not the first name on the birth certificate.

Here in New Mexico an astonishingly large number of people are only known by a nickname. I work the information desk at the local hospital, and it never fails to amaze me that so many visitors have absolutely no idea what the actual name of the person they want to see. The women are even worse, because it's anyone's guess as to what surname they might be under.

Willard Mitt Romney and everyone knows him as Mitt is nothing. Try Jesus Maria Lopez only everyone knows her as Graciela Trujillo. I am making up these particular names, but it's not uncommon here for someone to go by a totally different name than their legal one. And of course their name on the patient list will be the legal one. Or someone says, I want to visit my friend's mother and I know she's here but I don't know her name. Please, call your friend and try to find out.
