As Tropical Storm Isaac continues to move toward its Wednesday landfall, St. Bernard Parish President David Peralta this afternoon has called for a mandatory evacuation by 4 p.m. today for people living outside the hurricane protection levees, from Verret down past Hopedale. Normal government operations are now closed and St. Bernard's Office of Emergency Preparedness is in full operation and residents can call that office at 504.278.4268.
St. Bernard fishermen, similar to those across the coast, navigated boats to safer waters, or hauled them onto trailers to drive them inland. Crabbers emptied and pulled up crab traps in preparation for Isaac's arrival.
Residents outside of the levee protection cut plywood to board up their homes.
Cars and trailer this morning were parked inside the Verret floodwall on Louisiana 46, and during a 2 p.m. meeting today, Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority - East officials likely will determine whether to close the Verret floodgates, in part dependent on rising tides but also potentially to limit the amount of sightseers heading down to eastern St. Bernard.
