Before I get to the repercussions, I feel it's worth demonstrating the many ways the Romney campaign has used racism in their campaign against the President. They can deny it all they want, but Romney has played the Race Card. He's gone there, and there is no turning back.
Here are the many ways they've used racism.
Saying Obama STOLE
They started with accusing Obama of STEALING from Medicare to fund Obamacare. They said "He STOLE from Medicare". It was a systemic attack from the campaign:
- Sununu says: "Obama Stole"
- Bachman says "Obama Stole"
- RNC Chairman says: "Obama Stole"
- Romney says: "Obama Robbed"
While this lie has been proven false many times, they continue to use it. And we all know why: because saying a black man stole something are words that have powerful repercussions.
Saying Obama Removed the Work Requirement from Welfare
Romney on Welfare:
I think everyone knows exactly what Romney was implying as there has been great consensus on it among fact checkers and the media that t is false and a racial play. So Mr. Romney, in other words, Obama is buying the votes of his homies', is that correct? And it works. As stated by Howard Fineman on Morning Joe, the Romney Campaign has been testing various arguments with focus groups and found the welfare argument, even though it has been proven a lie and the media continues to remind listeners and viewers that it is a lie, it still works to pull votes from working white women who carry racial anger over welfare recipients who do not need to work.
Voter Suppression Laws Across the Nation
It cannot be disputed that the voter suppression laws seek to prevent more Obama voters from being able to vote than anyone else. The laws target the poor, the elderly and the minorities. In Ohio, it was even partisan, where the Secretary of State declared that voting precincts in Republican districts would have early voting and extended hours while Democratic districts would not. And it goes beyond legislation. As Rachel Maddow pointed out, they intend to intimidate Obama voters by having white members of the Tea Party question black voters at voting precincts. My friends, this is a return to Jim Crow and a direct violation of The Voting Rights Act.
"Nobody's ever asked to see my birth certificate." -- Mitt Romney a week before the RNC
Wow. Romney is going full bore on racism. Everyone here remembers that the Tea Party movement was founded on the racism of the birthers. Even before Obama took office, the Teabaggers were out there with their teabagger kids holding monkey puppets, teabaggers holding signs of Obama photoshopped to look like a native in Africa and videos of idiot tea baggers screaming he's not one of us, he's one of them, he's go *their* bloodlines, he's not American, etc, etc, etc. The sickening movement was dismissed until they latched onto more standard conservative issues like taxes and the economy. And now Romney brings it full circle by going back to the racial hatred that started the Teabagger movement. Why?
Romney failed to define himself and thereafter was unable to make any gains in the polls or the state of the election. When issues came up, he'd actually lose ground instead of gaining, showing that he was too weak, even among members of his own party. He needed to energize his base first before making any gains with independents. So he returns to the racial hatred that started the Tea Party. Why after so many decades after the Civil Rights movement are people trying to re-open this healing wound. Things have gotten better, but as long as people like Mitt Romney continue to open this wound, it will never heal. The same could be said for Women's rights and LGBT Equality. After the highest court in the land soundly brings the gavel of justice down on one side, some people just can't move on. It is up to each successive generation to have fewer and fewer people treat the issue as new and argue it all over again. If people like Mitt Romney are allowed to continue, this nation will never move forward on issues that are clearly decided, both legally and morally.
And what happens as a result? This happens:
- GOP Attendee throws nuts in African American Camera Woman's Face saying "This is how we feed the animals".
- GOP Boos Puerto Rico at GOP Convention in Disgusting Display of Racism
- White Racists (Former RNC Pages) plot to Assassinate the President
