Even today I have a two-DVD set with the original Japanese movie, “Gojira” on one disc and “Godzilla” (with Raymond Burr) on the other.

So there!

But really, I have a question that has plagued me for some 50 years: what’s with the “oxygen destroyer” that kills Godzilla? I know it would suffocate him but how does it reduce him to bones? How is tissue destroyed by removing the oxygen, but the bones remain intact?

Oxygen Destroyer is activated at 2'00"
Godzilla transforms from flesh and tissue to bones at 3'10"
(This clip does not have the original soundtrack--no dialog or original music)

Do you have the answer? I never could figure it out…

Emiko Yamane and her love interest

played by the late, lovely Momoko Kochi. I had a girlhood crush on her.

Occurred to me there are many Japanese films, I have seen where the main character sacrifices themselves for loved ones, or for the good of the village, town, country etc. Its not uncommon. In-fact, in the United States we are always used to having the HAPPY ENDING..but in most Asian films, the ending is not always a happy one. Tragedies are almost always expected in many Japanese films. Even in Anime, some of my favorite Characters were killed at the end. They know the odds of surviving a disaster, and even a sad ending can be a good one, sometimes.
