He was just as good in his speech in 2008 - and many others that he gave in 2006 when he put together an excellent set of speeches in case he ran again.
Many of his 2004 speeches were very good and well thought out, but were mostly not shown on TV - except on CSPAN. He is a powerful speaker and the first time he became known was when he spoke out so eloquently in 1971 - leading Morie Safer to ask the 27 year old if he wanted to be President.

(10,117 posts)...in 2004, where he could have just walked away, he has amazingly continued towork for and push for what this country needs to succeed. The country should thank John Kerry. We owe him a lot.

(59,504 posts)Here is a link to reviews of his 2008 convention speech. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/the-kerry-surprise/
The NYT called it the best non-acceptance speech at a Democratic convention in 2 decades - http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/kerry-hits-it-home/
Last convention, MSNBC and CNN had pundits speaking of the earlier Clinton speech and did not show Kerry's speech.

(6,261 posts)My wife was a delegate for Kerry at our state convention in 2004 and got to meet Al Gore. She said he was really charming, loose and funny. Nothing like his public image at all.
I suspect the same thing may have happened to Kerry. There's something about our political process that forces these people into a straight-jacket that they don't emerge from until the campaign's over, when we can see what they're really like again.
Shame.

(20,854 posts)they had to turn him into box on the back Bush to stay even with Kerry in the 2nd and 3rd one. Kerry was a good candidate the media had their thumb in their ass fighting a war that had been over 30 years. Bush had the bully pulpit, the media and he still need Ohio to beat Kerry. I think Kerry did alright, a more sane electorate would have killed Bush in a landslide. But even this election is still relatively close and the GOP is total meh right now. It is just insane.
