When asked about participating in specific government social programs, 97 percent of Republicans and 98 percent of Democrats say they have taken part in a government program of some kind, according to a 2008 survey run by the Cornell Survey Research Institute. Not just one or two either; the survey found that people had used around five social policies on average.

The thing is, more than half the country denies having used a government program at all.

Those findings are of particular interest now, after a Mitt Romney fundraising video leaked, one in which he called the 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay income taxes “dependent on government.” This survey’s findings show that those Americans who pay income taxes are also benefitting from government assistance in some form, even if they are not fully aware of it.

8. Obama couldn't rebuild infrastructure as needed because of Republican obstructionism.

The Senate was only able to pass a stimulus package where the majority of it was nothing but pork-barrel special interest tax cuts for various corporate interests. Only a portion of it was actual money for roads, bridges, and various infrastructure programs.

The Republicans were adamant against jobs programs to put people back to work and money in their pockets and funding the stimulus package with tax hikes on income earners above 250,000. They would only agree to a stimulus package that was predominantly tax cuts for the rich.

The end result was a stimulus package that bares more resemblance to what a Republican president would do (just tax cuts for wealthy interests) than a president who resembles Franklin Roosevelt (a New Deal-style jobs program/infrastructure investment).

Check the record. Republicans filibustered more bills in the last four years than Democrats in the last four decades.

You had people in the Senate like Mitch McConnell going on TV and saying that the primary goal of the Republican Party was to deny Obama another term in office. People needed help, not politics. They could give a crap who was president as long as the House and Senate passed needed bills to the White House to be signed.
