(54,068 posts)on being serious (and on not figuring out the message in the shark hug photo) I would say yes, being liberal is intrinsically a humanistic philosophical viewpoint. It's a commitment to using the power of the people's government to better the living conditions of all people. All people. It's rooted in the belief that people can have their lives improved and should benefit from it.
There's simply no room in that kind of philosophy for saying, say, we'll help our kind (liberals) but deny the benefits of government protection to people who voted against us. To do so would be the very definition of "illiberal." In concrete and fully pragmatic terms, to be liberal is to advocate helping all people--and helping people is the most basic expression of love.
I'm not saying you can't hate Republicans. I'm just saying that if you do, you're not really a liberal. Or at least you too could use a little personal betterment.
