Obama Bobblehead With "Feces": Catholic League's Answer To "Piss Christ"

The controversial "Piss Christ" photograph by Andres Serrano that is going on view at a Midtown gallery tomorrow has really been bothering Catholic League president Bill Donohue. He told Fox News last week, "It seems like we have a protected class for Muslims as well as some other segments of our population. But when it comes to Christians, it's an all-out war." So now Donohue has created a video showing off his answer: An Obama bobblehead in a jar with feces.

Okay, so the "feces" are actually just brown Play-Doh, while the piss in Serrano's photograph is actually Serrano's urine (it's a photograph of a crucifix in urine) which upsets mostly Republicans because it received some funding from the National Endowment for the Arts in the 1980s. Donohue complains in the video, "He didn't put Mohammed in there, he didn't choose any other religion, he just decided to do it to Jesus," and seems most upset about where it's being displayed: "If this Piss Christ had shown up in Soho or down in the Village in some dump that nobody would care about or in Chelsea, we wouldn't say much about it. But where is it gonna be shown? 57th between Fifth and Sixth Avenues right in the heart the heart of Midtown Manhattan."

Of course, Donohue has also launched a war against victims of the pedophile priests instead of holding the leadership of the Catholic church responsible for all the scandals. 17. When I first heard about the Piss Christ controversy

--he first thing that entered my mind was the Taoist saying "Where is the Tao? In urine and excrement. Cleave the rock--there am I." Serrano, a devout Catholic, may have been going for a Taoist representation of Christ here, Christ sanctifying the piss instead of the piss degrading Christ. He also had a print made by soaking paper in milk and impressing the image of Christ into it while the paper was still wet. He called it "Milk Christ," and that one didn't get nearly as much notoriety.

And then there was the Ken Kesey story, which I can't find online, in which he described dozing off in front of the TV one night, and wakening to a vision of the crucified Christ surrounded by an ethereal golden glow. Turned out it was a news story about Piss Christ. Interesting that when the aesthetic reaction comes first, it is one of reverence and awe, and only later does the intellectual knowledge that the golden color is piss change this perception. Serrano may have been trying to make that point as well.

Now, WTF does Obama have to do with that?
