Romney needs some jokes. And he needs them for his first presidential debate on Wednesday.

-snipping most of the column, to get to what happened at their $6 million fundraiser at the Beverly Hilton last week-

Ann Romney introduced her husband with a family anecdote: “They say if you look for a body of a Romney body, you look upstream, because they’ve been — that’s the kind of guys that they are,” Ann said. “They fight and work, and they, they’ll find their bodies upstream, and that’s what he will do.”

The audience seemed more than a little baffled, and Mitt Romney tried to ride to the rescue.

“I don’t think they followed that one,” Romney said. “You’ve got to try that again.”

“I don’t tell jokes very well,” Ann admitted.

“Can I tell that?” Romney said. “It’s in a book about one of my ancestors. It said the story of Romneys is if you hear that a Romney has drowned in a river, you look upstream for the body; that’s the joke.”

“I thought I said that,” Ann said. “But I guess I didn’t.”

Hey, c’mon, give them a break. They grew up in Michigan, not the Catskills.

And they’ll be performing until at least until Nov. 6.
