Reich: Four reasons why Mitt Romney isn't toast

<snip>

So I haven't been surprised by all the calls I've been getting lately from my inside-the-Beltway friends telling me "Romney's toast."

Hold it. Rumors of Romney's demise are premature for at least four reasons.

-- First, between now and Election Day come two jobs reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics -- Oct. 5 and Nov. 2. If they're as bad as the last report, showing only 96,000 jobs added in August (125,000 are needed just to keep up with population growth) and the lowest percentage of employed adults since 1981, Romney's claim that the economy is off track becomes more credible. And Obama's claim that it's on the mend will be harder to defend.

Economic predictions are always hazardous, but with gas prices rising, corporate profits shrinking, most of Europe in recession, Japan still a basket case and the Chinese economy slowing, the upcoming job reports are unlikely to be stellar.

-- Second, between now and Election Day come three presidential debates, the first on Oct. 3.

Number 3 is money and number 4 is voter disenfranchisement and voter intimidation.

All Obama has to do is remind voters of the "jobs report" for China. Mention how many jobs Mitt created for Chinese workers.

Sure, the Governor created jobs...in China!['i]

It made no sense then, and it makes even less sense now.

As for Reich's four points:

1) Jobs reports: Ask Mitt how that worked out after the convention.

2) Debates: Really? Mitt's going to get lucky?

3) Money: Mitt is having financial problems. Hard to believe, but it appears they've been lying. Also, their big donors appear to have maxed out. President Obama outraised them in August.

4) Disenfranchisement: Always a possibility, but does anyone believe that Mitt can overcome significant leads in most states when is campaign is losing ground? I mean, Republicans will do anything to win, but they lost in 2008.

The jobs reports won't derail the President by themselves, unless they are extremely bad. And even then, they wouldn't necessarily be a fatal blow. At this I think both candidates have been defined in the eyes of nearly all voters.
The debates are only decisive if one candidate says something incredibly stupid, such as Ford declaring that Eastern Europe was not under Soviet domination. Again, they are unlikely to change a siginificant number of minds.
The threat of right-wing lunatics stealing votes, intimidating minorities at the polls and generally acting like morally bankrupt storm troopers ... that is something that truly worries me.
