(12,761 posts)They will email you if you ordered anything anyway. So if there's any suspicious activity on your account, you just check your account when the email says you ordered something you didn't.

(82,120 posts)Fake calls from Apple and Amazon support: What you need to know
Scammers are calling people and using the names of two companies everyone knows, Apple and Amazon, to rip people off. Heres what you need to know about these calls.
In one version of the scam, you get a call and a recorded message that says its Amazon. The message says theres something wrong with your account. It could be a suspicious purchase, a lost package, or an order they cant fulfill.
In another twist on the scam, you get a recorded message that says theres been suspicious activity in your Apple iCloud account. In fact, they say your account may have been breached.
In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Dont do either. Its a scam. Theyre trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number.
If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up.
- Do not press 1 to speak with customer support
- Do not call a phone number they gave you
- Do not give out your personal information

(5,703 posts)I always let any call I dont recognize go to voice mail. What tipped me off that it was a scam was that it mentioned my Amazon card. I dont have one anymore
That's funny about the caller ID.

(16,616 posts)And the message warned me that someone using my account had ordered a high-end ($690) Apple product.
I logged in and checked my account and it was fine.
Thanks for posting, though, in case others are victims of these scam artists.

I knew it was a scam, because we don't have an Amazon account.
The couple times we bought something that way, I checked out as a guest!

(13,873 posts)legit otherwise. I got to PayPal and look and there's no issue. I don't think I even bothered to change my PW after the first time.

(111,792 posts)If your Caller ID still has the number, write it down. If you don't see anything when you log in and go to "My Account" at Amazon, call the cops and do an online report at the FBI.
My guess is that this has a flashing neon sign saying SCAM! all over it. Whatever you do, don't call those assholes back. They'll think they got a live one.

SHAKEN = Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs
This is a method by which Caller ID gets "signed" as legitimate and, thus, can be reliably used for call blocking purposes (i.e., calls with unsigned caller ID can be blocked.)
All of these fake calls from the IRS, light company, Amazon, etc., use forged caller ID which won't be signed.

(3,407 posts)I didn't hear about customer service.

(33,419 posts)It doesn't mean you've been hacked. They just want to find people who are stupid enough to "press one for customer service." And then give the spammers their personal account info.
These calls should be banned by Verizon, AT&T and all the phone monopolies. Why aren't they?

(82,849 posts)I was answered by "Ken Williams" (but not before I demanded his name) who was sporting a thick accent:
"Ken Williams, huh?"
"Yes, now--"
"Is that your full name?"
"Yes, this is Ken Williams."
"What's Ken short for? (Figuring that he wouldn't know the name "Kenneth" ) "
"My name is Ke--"
" (Suspicion confirmed) What's Ken short for? Don't you know?"
He wound up hanging up in a sputtering rage. When I don't feel like baiting these time-wasting fuckers, I hold the receiver up to my Lewis Black bobblehead and let rip with "Are you fucking shittin' me" or "Goooo fuck yourself!"
