While the Twin Towers were still smoking and every intelligence agency was telling the Bush Administration theyd failed to act on one warning after another regarding al Qaeda, Donald Rumsfeld was already angling to turn the tragedy into an illegal, barbarous war against Iraq.

(48,401 posts)History will remember him. I wonder if the monster had any regrets toward the end, though I rather doubt it.

(11,764 posts)At least he would never admit whether he did.
Rachel had on an author who wrote 3 books about the period of the Bush Admin and Rumsfeld's influence. Rumsfeld had been asked on many occasions and would always say that he had no regrets and made no mistakes.
He was a true ideologue and scumbag.
PatSeg
(48,401 posts)totally incapable of admitting he made any mistakes. Such people have been destroying what others have built throughout history, playing god with the world as if it was their own personal game board and the common folks, just their pawns. They really believe they are superior to the rest of us and any human loss or suffering is just collateral damage in their grand plan. Hey, life is messy, "stuff happens", but he doesn't give a damn.

(11,764 posts)We certainly get our share of decent leaders like President Obama, President Biden, Nancy Pelosi, etc...
People like Trump, Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, etc... tend to rise to powerful position because they have that megalomania and are not hindered in that pursuit. People like President Obama and Biden see power as a responsibility and a burden. They take it on because they think they can make a positive difference. People like Rumsfeld see power as a tool, to further their desires and augment their own interests.
The man literally lived in the house of Ed Covey, a man notorious for "breaking" slaves. Covey was featured in Frederick Douglas' writings. He was a horrid man and the ranch was a place of unspeakable torture. Rumsfeld bought it, presumably because he thought it was a cool historical house to live in. That says a lot about who Rumsfeld was.
PatSeg
(48,401 posts)I cannot imagine wanting to live in that house, but I suppose I can imagine someone like Rumsfeld choosing to live there. Hey, maybe it was haunted and he was plagued with the sounds of suffering.
I agree, the tyrants aren't hindered by principles and morality, which makes them that much more dangerous. Without such limitations, they can go further and faster, causing so much more suffering and pain.

(16,987 posts)you should only say something 'nice' when speaking of the dead.
So, here goes:
Rumsfeld died? Nice!

(48,401 posts)I suppose it might be true regarding petty crap, but a monster is a monster and death doesn't change that. People will be remembered by their deeds and this guy was a horrible human being.

(10,488 posts)Not to public figures. People like Rumsfeld who are responsible for that much death & destruction don't deserve that courtesy
PatSeg
(48,401 posts)When they died, no one said, "Don't speak ill of the dead". Now if it was your brother-in-law who rarely returned anything he borrowed, maybe it wouldn't be appropriate to complain about it at his funeral. War criminals? They don't get the same consideration.

Yeah. Fully-dressed. In an air-conditioned office. Not surrounded by rifle-toting thugs and barking attack dogs. Not frightened of the possibility of water-boarding or electrocution. Not forced into humiliating poses for the gratification of the dregs of American society.
Yeah, real hero there, Donald...

(48,401 posts)walk away, get something to eat, etc., whenever he chose. What a cruel soulless monster. He knew what was going on, but he just didn't care. The prisoners were not human beings to him and suffering was an inevitable byproduct of his plans. Cuz, you know, "stuff happens".

(66,820 posts)Which just shows how much we take such comforts for granted.
Nothing else quite proved that the Iraq War was not the World War II John Wayne daydream they were hoping it was going to be than this.
It used to be: "Wait until the Americans get into the war! Then you'll really be sorry!"
Now it's: "I hope the Americans don't get involved in the war. We'll really be sorry..."
PatSeg
(48,401 posts)except possibly in his own mind. The poor fool actually believed he was transforming the world for the better and that he would be redeemed by history. Meanwhile, the monsters like Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wolfowitz took advantage of George's delusions and naïve desire to be a better man than his father.
I agree that too many try to relive the heroics of World War II. How sad that countries now think, "I hope the Americans don't get involved in the war. We'll really be sorry..." How far we have fallen in such a short period of time.

(2,713 posts)PNAC lays it all out. All that was needed, these fascist bastards claimed in this published document, was another Pearl Harbor and they could rock and roll according to their thirst for blood and oil with the (almost) full and unquestioning support of the American media and people.
I dont know that the Bush Administration plotted and planned 9/11 or even deliberately let down their guard to enable it -- but, goddammit, when the towers fell, they were ready to send in the troops! And their readiness was all because PNAC stressed the importance of being ready to take advantage of the new Pearl Harbor, if and when.
