FORBES: Romney Family Investment Ties To Voting Machine Company Causing Concern

FULL TITLE: Romney Family Investment Ties To Voting Machine Company That Could Decide The Election Causing Concern

. . .

It turns out that Hart Intercivic is owned, in large part, by H.I.G. Capital—a large investment fund with billions of dollars under management—that was founded by a fellow named Tony Tamer. While nobody is clear just how much H.I.G. owns of Hart Intercivic, we do learn that H.I.G. employees hold at least two of the five Hart Intercivic board seats.

A little more digging turns up a few tidbits of data than soon become ‘the story’.

Tony Tamer, H.I.G.’s founder, turns out to be a major bundler for the Mitt Romney campaign, along with three other directors of H.I.G. who are also big-time money raisers for Romney.

Indeed, as fate would have it, two of those directors, Douglas Berman and Brian Schwartz, were actually in attendance at the now infamous “47 percent” fundraiser in Boca Raton, Florida.

With that news, voters everywhere start to get this queasy feeling in the pits of their stomach.

But wait—if you’re feeling a bit ill now, you’ll want to get the anti-acids ready to go because it’s about get really strange.

To everyone’s amazement, we learn that two members of the Hart Intercivic board of directors, Neil Tuch and Jeff Bohl, have made direct contributions to the Romney campaign. This, despite the fact that they represent 40 percent of the full board of directors of a company whose independent, disinterested and studiously non-partisan status in any election taking place on their voting machines would seemingly be a ‘no brainer’.

. . .

there was a bit of snark in there as well but - wouldn't there be some sort of backup for voting if the machines failed? I know when they were first installed there was talk of the old style ballot counters still being in the warehouse just in case they were needed.

There must be some way to vote without machines. Unfortunately it might already be too late to get ballots printed and polling places reconfigured.

Sat Oct 20, 2012, 10:25 PM
Oct 2012

--excerpt from the Forbes article posted by the OP, which came out today:

..."So, why would these individuals who serve on the board of directors of Hart Intercivic go out of their way to make a contribution to any political candidate given the critical importance of their company remaining above reproach when it comes to the political process? And why would those who run the company that owns Hart Intercivic be giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to a political candidate? And why would a political candidate and his family have a financial relationship with a company that owns a chunk of the voting machine company that will be counting the actual votes given to that political candidate or his opponent?

Keith Olbermann was suspended from his job at MSNBC for donating a couple hundred bucks to a local candidate that was a friend of his. Why? Because his employer required that journalists at the network stay free of having given such contributions to any candidate for all the obvious reasons.

Is it really too much to ask that those who control the voting machines that record and count the votes of our elections be held to at least the same standard?"...

Is there any integrity left in this bleeping country? I'm surprised the Rethugs got so careless so as to raise these red flags...

Undeniably shady but, as I understand it, there is no law against partisan ownership of voting machines so, other than strict non-partisan oversight wherever these machines are used, there isn't a whole lot that can legally be done about it right now. Would definitely urge the Obama administration to enact appropriate laws to protect our votes from these yahoos during his second term.

Am not well-versed in campaign finance law but I do know the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform of the early 2000s was butchered mercilessly in order to get something passed and left far too many gaping loopholes. Cannot say whether this situation constitutes any prosecutable offense. It should, IMO, but does it under current law?

As for intent to cause fraud, well, intent is difficult to prove. Actual fraud? You can't prosecute a crime that hasn't happened yet (this year). Strict non-partisan oversight is the only way we can be reasonably assured these voting machines won't be rigged to throw elections this year, but it doesn't seem likely that will happen. Remember the guy from Diebold promising to deliver Ohio? Big stink, but nothing really came of it. Except for the exit polling being dropped because it didn't match the voting machines' numbers.

The question I had in mind when posting earlier was whether a partisan person or group should be allowed any ownership of voting machines. From what I've read, there is currently no specific law against that.

What I would really like to see is a law against any voting machines, period. But I don't suppose that's going to happen either.

Sun Oct 21, 2012, 01:17 PM

why does anyone think that the same methods will stop it now?

RIP, INDEED, ANDY STEPHENSON!

I wonder how many DUers still remember the constant barrage that the voting machines' crimes received in the early days of DU and with very little help from our exalted Country's leaders?

I have a friend who was always working the elections in our state, who piously informed me that those machines just couldn't be tampered with. She was sure that because she was there that nothing happened. I even tried to explain how many ways our votes could be tampered with. She was blind and still is.

This effort will be put down, as is usual, as Dems going wild and will, unfortunately, get nowhere. Ignorance is killing this country, and we should probably be more concerned at the dastardly dumbing down of our education system. Critical Thinking is a has been in most of our high schools and colleges. Our school boards have been taken over by Republicans or people pretending to be otherwise, in most of the country.

How can we make inroads when ignorance abounds? There are too many people who do not understand the importance of education. Only a small percentage of young people that I know have any curiosity about the true situation in this country today. They go and play on their computers, phones, game boxes and kindles, and ignore the country's deterioration.

In this country we spend an inordinate amount of time watching TV, either footballs or zombies, but give no time or very little time to the crisis going on around us. I cannot even engage my grown daughters, who are very smart, in a conversation about the political future of their own country. You see, they are too smart. They believe with their superior world, that nothing is happening that is important as long as they have their electronic toys.

I wish I were more optimistic about the future of our country; but, I just don't see it changing. The vast majority of the people I know, relatives and friends, are blinded by the right.

49. Ties to Bain and Mit R Money
Sun Oct 21, 2012, 01:01 AM
Oct 2012

H.I.G., in turn, has ties to Bain & Co. and Mitt Romney directly:

H.I.G. was founded by Tony Tamer, a former Bain employee and bundler for Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Of H.I.G.’s 22 American directors, 21 donated to Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. One person made no political donations at all; one person donated to both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama; the remaining 20 directors donated exclusively to Mitt Romney in 2012. (See below for links to donations.)

Of these 22 American directors, seven of them (nearly one-third) are former Bain employees. Now, we should note (as a reader helpfully pointed out), this is Bain & Co., where Mitt Romney used to work way back when and then left in order to start the affiliated Bain Capital. The connection is therefore a little more tenuous, but we still find H.I.G.’s overwhelming allegiance and financial support of the Romney campaign surprising (not that it’s surprising that a private equity company would lean Republican, but this level of support is pretty unusual).

Four of H.I.G.’s directors, Tony Tamer, John Bolduc, Douglas Berman, and Brian D. Schwartz, are Romney bundlers along with former Bain and H.I.G. manager Brian Shortsleeve.

Two of H.I.G.’s managing directors, Douglas F. Berman and Brian D. Schwartz, were present at the $50,000 per plate fundraiser where Mitt Romney made his notorious ”47%” comments.

H.I.G. employees currently make up the majority of the Hart InterCivic’s five-member board of directors. Two of these three directors of the voting machine company, Neil Tuch and Jeff Bohl, have donated directly to Mitt Romney’s campaign.

H.I.G. is the 11th largest donor to Mitt Romney’s campaign. H.I.G. employees have given $338,000 to the Romney campaign, outpacing even Bain Capital itself, which gave $268,000.

could be address later this afternoon if the Elections Commission and DoJ would hold a joint press conference in which they state that, electronic voting will be allowed only if the company providing the voting machine and tabulator machines' code in trust until after the election. Further, the FEC and DoJ will, upon the request of any citizen, will audit (including the code of the machine) the results of any precinct where election results conflict with pre and post election polling and early voting/absentee voting results. And should this audit produce evidence of wrong-doing, the top 6 executives (including the CEO) of the voting machine and the companies board will imputed with having knowledge of the evidence and will be charged with treason ... carrying the possible penalty of death.

--covering all voting machines AND tabulators--would NOT be hard to do.

If oversight was mandatory and penalities enforced, we would NOT have to put up with this!!! We need BASIC deterrents to crime.

I can only pray that these obvious attempts to buy this election do not payout. We have to get out our voters.

If it is too long, mea culpa. The writer brings up extremely large arguments about these machines and could't really edit for brevity.

The sanctity of voting in America is supposed to be one of our most important virtues.”

I suppose its “supposed to be,” but any look at our voting system and any independent observer would quickly conclude we don’t care very much about elections and they aren’t high on our concern list.

First, we are the only industrial democracy that leaves national voting to local concerns. Universally, national elections are run by a national agency that maintains uniformity of voting processes across the entire nation. We don’t even do that within a single state (except for maybe the small ones).

Second, we are the only industrial democracy to have our elections run by what amounts to a volunteer and minimally trained group. The average age of a U.S. poll worker is 72 years. They are typically paid less then $50 for a LONG days work and have had less than four hours of training. We spend more money paying and training referees for college sports than for workers for our national elections.

Third, we are the only industrial democracy that uses commercial software not completely under the control of the national government. Instead, we have an almost endless variety of hastily-created systems designed to cash in on the nearly $1 billion available under the Help America Vote Act of 2002. Standards to protect the voting integrity were mostly a product of the industry and did not represent best practices in voting. If the United Nations Electoral Assistance Division were to review our voting system, we wouldn’t pass.

Fourth, we are the only industrial democracy that holds voting on a work day. Most hold elections on weekends or have a declared national holiday.

Lastly, a majority of those of voting age don’t bother to vote. Only in big elections does even a majority of registered voters bother to do so.

Also, voting ID isn’t a problem in most other industrial nations because the national government GIVES everyone an ID card.

No, we have a sloppy, cheap system run by poorly-trained old people that barely operates with a hope and a prayer and sometimes not even that. We simply don’t care about voting. There is a saying to watch what a man does, not what he says, to see what is important to him. As a nation, we care more about Pee Wee League Football than voting.

The fastest way to get this issue investigated by AG Holder is via the White House - there is a petition at WhiteHouse.org/petitions that will get this in front of them quickly - tomorrow if we can get 25k signatures! Sign it and spread the word. There are other petitions out there, but this is the only one that will get in front of Barrack Obama in time to make a difference!
