Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has used the historic milestone of her Platinum Jubilee to redefine the future of the monarchy, calling for the Duchess of Cornwall to be known as Queen Camilla when Charles becomes King.
When Charles married Camilla in 2005, the couple announced she intended to be known as "Princess Consort" despite having a right to the title of Queen. It was seen as a recognition of the sensitivities around a title that was destined for Charles' first wife, Diana.
It's the same reason Camilla doesn't use the title of Princess of Wales.

Somebody should have warned Diana that her marriage was just for show.
(I'm glad Prince Harry escaped The Firm.)

(13,577 posts)is toxic. I agree that I don't blame Harry and Meghan for leaving.
I have no problem with Camilla being Queen. She's somewhat popular. I mean, they have a prince who was besties with Epstein and Maxwell. And old racist Princess Michael of Kent. Camilla is the least of their problems, these days. And it never would have happened if the BRF didn't insist Charles marry a "virgin." I think society holding her virginity up as a positive quality is a huge problem in the first place. (JMHO, of course.)
Diana was screwed over. I wish she had more agency and refused to marry into that toxic stew.
So I guess my biggest support for Camilla being queen is that the whole crew kind of sucks, and she's not nearly as toxic as many of the others....

(109,061 posts)Not for the sons, though. Most people in their position wouldn't love seeing the person who helped make their mother's life miserable being honored in that way.

(1,979 posts)It was a horrible thing that happened and of course, everyone loved and misses Diana, but love is love and Charles clearly loves Camilla. She is his wife, and if he is King, she should be Queen.
Before we know it, it will be William and Kate - Who I believe will be wonderful in their roles.

(69,096 posts)British rulers for generations...those who were not hanged emigrated. My Grandfather came over in the 20's on the run...he was about to be hanged. Good Queen Victoria wrote about how she hoped the potato famine would kill the native Irish and God-fearing Englishman would take their place....so many people starved during the potato famine. And how many Irish were thrown off their farms for sheep and other reasons? A million people died during the famine years it is estimated and Victoria is known by many as the "Famine Queen"
Also, she presided over the British empire...a blood-soaked empire it was too. I have no use for any of them...past or present. It seems to me that the royal family costs the nation too much money and is of little use...and considering Prince Andrew's behavior can still cause great harm to others.

Though they don't have much power, they are part of the line. Descended from William the Conqueror.
Their ancestors were more interesting, having to actually rule the Kingdom. A lot happened on the way. But if you are interested in the history, it is interesting to see how Camilla could be Queen (Anne Boleyn was - why not Camilla? )

(69,096 posts)And the empire wasn't so great for those unfortunate countries that were used for their resources and such...don't get me started on Ireland where they made it so they could hold Irish suspects without a trial or evidence...I read about the potato famine too where they did nothing much to help...no I do not admire the monarchy. And look at Andrew still using his connections to evade I guess one would call it rape and or molestation of underage girls...some of whom may have been held against their will.

(101,576 posts)As noted below, Victoria's husband Albert was Prince Consort, but they didn't reuse that title for Philip. Both of them were princes of other entities, before they married (Philip of Greece, Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha!).

(17,292 posts)Up until a few years ago, females were shunted down the line of succession in favour of their brother/s, the understanding being that you only had a queen if there wasn't a king handy.
Therefore I think the understanding was that a king 'outranks' a queen although they may both be monarchs. Now that females retain their birth place in the line, the question is moot.
treestar
(82,383 posts)Old fashioned sexism meant that a male spouse of a Queen Regnant could not be called a King, since a King must be the ruler.
But now that they have changed the rules that women will not lose their place to a younger brother, they might also consider calling a female ruler's husband King Consort! It will be interesting, though we may not see it in our lifetime. Little George will outlive most of us.
There is a female heir to the throne of Belgium, I believe, who has a younger brother, but will be Queen under the new rules. So what will they call her husband.

muriel_volestrangler
(101,576 posts)It keeps being wished for on DU, but it goes against the fundamental way the English, Scottish and British monarchies have been run. It takes rebellions (against Mary Queen of Scots, or against James VII/II) for that kind of thing to happen, or an abdication. Even then, the person first in line has had some time as monarch before getting booted/resigning.

(33,418 posts)... will be William, and his wife (formerly Kate Middleton) will also have the title of Queen.
Now that Wills and Kate have 3 children, those kids have all stepped in line ahead of Harry, so he'll probably never be King. Just as well.

FakeNoose
(33,418 posts)... in favor of her son Charles. That means she would "retire" and let her son be King while she's still living. But that never happened and now Charles has become an old man of 73, waiting for Mums to die. When she goes Charles will be King for however long he lives, and Camilla will have the title of Queen. After Charles dies, his first son William (the older child of Charles and Diana) will be King and Kate will be Queen. The royalty line passes to their 3 children who are still very young. Prince Harry knows he'll never be King so all this royalty bullshit became too much for him. He and Meghan have opted out and that's why they moved here.

(15,243 posts)There is a part of me that doesnt like that Camilla is in Dianas place after Camilla and Charles kept seeing one another after he married Diana. I think that was slimey behavior from both of them. I know Diana wasnt faithful either but that was after she knew about Charles infidelity. If he had been honest, Diana might very well be alive and be Queen (whatever the correct title is). Or they might never have married at all. Who knows. It was a tragedy in many ways.
That said, its the Queens call. I have no stake in it.

(28,419 posts)I understand they both love each other, and it was sad for them both that Charles had to marry Dianna.
Dianna was a young, immature victim in all this.
Camilla knew Charles made his decision to marry another woman. Camilla should have bowed out, and centered her life around her own husband and children. Instead she continuously called on Charles, and she took his calls.
I have no respect for either one of them. Dianna had no chance to find happiness in her marriage.
We don't know if their marriage would have worked, but with Camilla butting in, it sure didn't help them.

(31,503 posts)she did when Diana died. Elizabeth II did not understand how much Diana was loved and to what extent she was ill treated by Charles.
My guess is that this decision will backfire. It won't help the monarchy to reward Camilla with the position that was rightfully Diana's.
