(24,411 posts)It was small. Maybe 1,000 people. The Obama crowd in Ames was at least 10,000, several weeks ago.
I'm going to pay attention to this a bit more, but it appears that Romney is having difficulty getting people to his events.
Anytime he does have a crowd, it is because he announces singers and other celebrities. It's as if he needs a draw--to get the people there.
I think we should give this a closer look--pay attention to where he goes, where he holds the event and how many attend--compared to Obama.
Obama's got 10,000+ crowds without any celebrities on the stage with him.
We appear to have tremendous enthusiasm.
I think this means something. If people are willing to attend your rally, they are also likely to vote as well. Conversely, if you are having trouble drawing crowds, it's possible that people aren't that enthusiastic about voting for you either. Romney may have a big enthusiasm gap. There is the rabid contingent of the Republican party who will vote for Romney as an anti-Obama vote. However, most Republicans were less-than-enthused about Romney. Most Republicans did not want Romney as first choice. Could be that this will cause lower-than-expected republican turnout.

Fewer people will question such a possibility with images of large crowds in their heads.

(14,040 posts)sorry, had to make a joke that was obvious.
I can only imagine how shocked his supporters are going to be after having been fed the "Momentum" meme and the pollsters lying about how well he's doing. It's going to cause a lot of unrest, IMO, among already mentally unbalanced people.

(309 posts)photos of Obama's crowds compared to Romney crowds, for each venue, go viral. I'd be more than willing to post each one on my facebook page so all of my friends can see for themselves. If a bunch of us did this, they couldn't deny the absence of a lack of enthusiasm from Barack's supporters.
Problem is, I have no idea how to create the pictures.

Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)I don't think it's photoshopped. I just think it was a bad pano job. You can see from the photos that they really didn't need to exaggerate the crowd. It was a decent sized crowd to begin with.
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)you can see the obvious photoshop... duplicated people, the Romney sign on the left looks like it covers "Ryan". It's def shopped.

(34,857 posts)Pushing this crap is going to backfire. It's not photoshopped. It's just a really shitty panorama with bad stitching. I've done bad stitching before and it often overlaps areas, mirrors others to make it come out at lease somewhat presentable. My guess is that this was done on a cell phone or a camera. It's not been photoshopped.
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)The highlighted areas are problem areas or duplications... Why would they need a panorama shot that shows the same things? I could understand if the areas that overlap had repeats but once you go beyond the first strut on the right and the whole crowd duplicates, it stops being panoramic. Finally, even if the photo hasn't been "shopped" to increase crowd size, the fact that this is so poorly done is laughable in and of itself.

(5,352 posts)Yep. Here's the photo I quickly pieced back together that I posted in the other thread. If someone on their campaign took the original, they're the laziest damned photographer ever. (And even disposable panoramic cameras net better shots than the one above with its multiple columns, overlapping Romney-Ryan banner, duplicated attendees and seating areas, etc.)
Then again, it came out not long ago that the Romney campaign copied Obama's website, so at least there's precedent for the "lazy bastard" explanation: http://www.salon.com/2012/09/10/romney_rips_off_obama_website

(32,723 posts)I stitched it together and found it's both a bad panorama AND it's been photoshopped.
The most obvious example is towards the back in the sunlight. There is a solitary figure and some trees that have been placed with a clone brush way over to the other side. There is absolutely no way that could have happened with a software glitch.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)It's an app called Photosynth or something similar.
It lets you stitch several snapshots together in a panorama. You can tell the position of the camera changed between shots used in the 'cloning' because more people are visible behind the pillar on the clone, than the main chunk.
It's a stupid user trick. You're supposed to stand still so the software can stitch it together properly. On my phone, and on the iPhone, it's called Photosynth.
That is not something someone sat down in Photoshop with the cloning brush and created by hand. Cloning in photoshop looks quite different when it goes wrong, and it never introduces NEW data into the picture.
tldr: someone is dumb and doesn't know how to use their phone camera, and posted the picture, probably thinking it looked great on the phone screen without realizing it looks like a funhouse mirror.

Mitt can't actually GO to Utah because it will scream "Mormon" to the evangelicals but it's like a gift that the Democratic Senate Majority Leader happens to be in the next town so it can provide cover.

(13,081 posts)It's a bad panoramic. The event was all over the local press and tv, and they all showed it as packed. The bullshit comes in the estimate of crowd size. The "official" estimates were between 6 and 15 thousand people. The event center only has 2400 seats. They're fixed and no more can be added. Maybe 500 more can fit on the grass. I know this for a fact, because when I there on Wednesday (Shakespeare in the Park)I asked one of the Pacilion's managers how many seats there were.
SemperEadem
(8,053 posts)anyone who uses photoshop can see it.
There are two circle holes in the roof of the tent, yet only only hole is shining a light on the crowd on a bright, clear and sunny day. Then there's the 1 1/2 holes in the roof as well as the disappearing/half transparent beam also on the right of the photo and the same crowd is in that part of the photo, too... that's not panoramic nothing--that's copy and paste onto a new layer.
slutticus
(3,428 posts)So why are there parallel effects in the supposedly copied sections? It looks like someone was panning during the different shots.
Bad panorama is my vote.
SemperEadem
(8,053 posts)to turn series of photos into a panoramic shot.
however, it is blatantly obvious that copy/paste was used and content-aware fill was used and nothing anyone here says is going to move me from that opinion.

(33,982 posts)Stick to photoshop. Though, I doubt you could produce such a fucked up image using JUST photoshop, even if you deliberately tried.
The campaign photo is a fucked up Photosynth. User was in motion while taking the pictures. That's all. It's not hard to figure out.
Beartracks
(12,820 posts)... while shooting a panorama, or moved between separate still shots that were then stitched together. You can see that the relationships of certain elements to the background elements are different on either side of some of the overlap seams. But the stitch job sucks big dogs. The main thing is that it's so ludicrous someone would post this image as-is on Romney's official Tumblr. "Reality Check" should be used just as often as "Spell Check," people!

(308 posts)using math their could not have been more than 6000 if we double the capacity .obama gets crowds of 12000 or more everywhere he goes, an the people are happy to see him. mitt tries to co-opt events ex:he goes to biker fest in daytona and claimed they were his supporters, there may have been some of his supporters,in the crowd but not all , he did the same thing with the coal miners one thing is for sure he will not get 47 percent of the vote .
jmowreader
(50,562 posts)The seamed areas aren't vertical--if you go to the OP and look at the image with the pink to denote the pieced-in areas, you'll see they're all diagonal. A bad panoramic would have vertical slices that didn't mesh, and this one doesn't.
I have a strange question: why in hell would you need to do a panoramic on this venue anyway? It's not that large, and from the camera position this photo was shot at you'd get the whole thing in one image with a 24mm lens--a 20 would be better but Romney is probably too broke to buy one.
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)Do you have an iPhone? Fuck around with it and try to do a panorama in Photosynth while moving around. You will get the same effect. You can do it on the Windows phone 7 platform as well. Probably droid too.

(8,377 posts)That's a waste of time. His campaign ought to have him in Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia, and Iowa from now until election day. Nowhere else.
This would be like Obama taking a day to do events in Austin, TX and Jackson, MS.
Really foolish at this stage of the campaign considering that people are voting RIGHT NOW in Ohio, Iowa and other states Romney MUST win.

(37,161 posts)This is his presidential campaign, and Mr. Businessman is showing all the concern for his "customers" as the businessmen whose customer service reps are unable to communicate with the people calling up because it was cheaper to move the operation to India or wherever.
Is he having fun firing people who provide services to him poorly? Is a presidential campaign really the place to have your enjoy yourself that way? Or should you treat it like something where little things count? His answer has repeatedly been "no, nobody gives a shit about that".

(9,298 posts)TV cameras that cover live events span around more in the crowds for BOTH sides. That would help tell the tale of authentic size.

(17,797 posts)...to look like a much bigger crowd.
No clone stamp or resizing needed, just some perspective adjustments to compensate for the extreme wide angle lens they shot this with.
Look at the base of the white pole and where it crosses the isle, one covers most of the stairs, the other doesn't and the little girl in the isle is facing a different direction too.
I'm going to try to break apart the pieced again, correct the wide angle distortion then put them back together, maybe even in After Effects if I don't get too bored with this.
