2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid Bests 2012 Toyota Prius v in October Sales
After its first full month of sales, the 2013 Ford C-MAX hybrid has managed to outsell gas-electric rival 2012 Toyota Prius v. Ford made the announcement today, giving us the reasons why it believes its latest people-hauling hybrid is beating the Toyota.
According to Ford, 3182 customers took home the C-MAX hybrid during October, more than the 2769 Prius v hybrids Toyota sold in the same month. Thanks to the C-MAX, Ford sold a total of 4612 hybrids last month, making it the automakers best October for hybrid sales. Ford points out that its C-MAX gets better fuel economy (EPA rated 47 mpg combined versus 42 mpg for the Prius v), has a lower base price ($25,995 including destination versus $27,345 for the Prius v), and best-in-class passenger room.....

I knew this thing was going to be a "Prius-killer."

(37,648 posts)that's a little disingenuous.
Still, this is good news. The more hybrids, the better.

(5,300 posts)Both the Prius C and the Prius Hatchback are smaller, less-expensive, and get better mileage than either.
I have had a Prius HB for 2.5 years and love it. It replaced my 2002 Prius Classic, which I traded in after 8 years and 165k miles. If I had to replace my current Prius, I would probably either get another PHB or a C. I like being able to commute from 100 miles north of Portland to Los Angeles and only have to stop for gas twice.
That said, I am glad Ford is making good cars now. The last Ford I owned was one I bought new in 1976,
was a piece of junk that, when I traded it in five years later because I was tired of not being able to get competent
repairs done on it (in Los Angeles), it had 66k miles, and was on its third transmission.

(22,308 posts)They sell every one they are able to get their hands on.
Also, there are a full line of C-Max vehicles, including a plug in version. The posts that claim that it is just one model outselling one Prius model are misleading.
This thing is going to be a Prius Killer. No doubt about it.
Not only that but IMO the fully electric Focus is going to be the Leaf killer, and the Fusion Energi is going to give the Volt serious issues too.
Suddenly, Ford is the leader in fuel efficient vehicles. It is just that most people don't know it yet.
The scuttlebutt is that the new fleet standards for fuel economy have pushed Ford to be aggressive when it comes to these type of vehicles. That allows them the wiggle room to continue to sell vehicles like the F-150, which is the best selling pickup in the U.S. and a great money maker for them.
The C-Max really is a nice looking vehicle. If I could afford a new car now it would be right at the top of my list.

(55,894 posts)some people actually need those hogs (people hauling livestock for example).

(22,308 posts)so if this is what it takes to keep those in production I am all for it. Besides the fact that the more efficient vehicles make sense for me as a personal vehicle.
P.S. The guy who owns the company, and owns 14 trucks of all shapes and sizes, drives a Volt.

(67,817 posts)We recently got a Fiesta. We looked at all the competition, including Toyota and Honda, and found Ford to be the best in the bunch. Good ratings for reliability, better equipped than most, and with a dealer willing to deal.
And the little car is fun to drive!

(67,817 posts)She does about 80 miles round trip. The destination is up a low mountain in west central MD. Maybe 1500 ft elevation with a fairly steep climb at the end of the trip.
The worst we have ever gotten is about 27 in a week of stop and go urban driving.

(39,665 posts)That's good value for the sticker price.

(37,648 posts)Even so, I test drove one. I didn't like the inside. The backseat was really unuseable. So cramped. And the cargo area...the backseats didn't fold all the way down, so the cargo area wasn't fully useable, either. It was fun to drive and took bumps fairly well. Driver seat comfortable. Lots of techie things I don't care about.
I went with the Honda Fit. Whoever designed that car, I don't know how they got that much space into such a small car. Seats fold down flat. Back seat comfy and roomy. Even back seats fold UP, so you can put a tall plant or something on the floor where the back seat should be. Front seats fold way down, too. The bad things: those awful headrests interfere with the head; driver's seat is uncomfortable for my middle aged back. But a zippy little car that is fun to drive, plenty of power, great gas mileage w/o having to buy a power package (27 - 30 mpg city; 36 mpg hwy).
Best small car I drove, hands down, was the VW GTI. But the gas mileage wsn't good enough, and it's too pricey. But a first rate, quality car with way cool plaid upholstery.

(5,943 posts)That dang Taurus is the finest car I've ever had. She just goes and goes.
My own personal anecdote aside, I'm just very impressed with the quality of the modern Ford product. I think it's second to none, including Toyota. We've been waiting eagerly for the C-Max to arrive on the market.

(2,500 posts)but none have made it to local dealerships in my area yet. It also offers 47mpg city/highway. This will be a game-changer for Ford. They are taking on the competition and beating them straight up.

(1,089 posts)After 6 months of research, test-driving, deciding I "should" buy a Prius, writing to Ford about my disappointment that their claimed mileage seemed to be a sham (several class-action lawsuits have been filed), I ended up buying an almost fully-loaded C-Max SEL (didn't get the active park assist). This car is incredibly comfortable, easy for my 86 year old father to get in and out of and FUN to drive!
I'm currently getting 40 mpg and have had several trips where the computer shows 45+ - I have put 750 miles on it so far - my first tank of gas reflected just over 38 mpg and I haven't had to re-fill the tank yet.
I love the power - if I want to go 75 or 80 on the highway, the car just goes. I can also drive totally on battery up to 62 mph - Ford is releasing a computer update sometime this month that will increase that to all-electric up to 85 mph (which the all electric version of the C-Max currently can do.
It's kind of strange to realize that I'm driving a computer as much as a car - I love the technology built into the car! The information screens and the "coaches" are way better than in the prius - it really helps to have real-time information about when the car is switching from electric to hybrid mode.
Ford has hit this one out of the park! I'm so happy Ford finally made a car I wanted to buy...
