"Most Mac guys are liberal," says Edge, director of IT at 318 Inc., one of the largest Mac consultancies in the U.S. The Mac has its roots in graphics, education and media companies. The advertising, marketing, video editing, sound, design and others who form the core of the Mac user market "are far more liberal minded than corporate finance, for example," Edge says.
Edge also does a lot of work with companies that have standardized on Windows, which he sees as much more of a red-state operating system. "You go out to a Microsoft client and theyre going to be really conservative," he says.

No wonder both my wife & I drive Soobies & live in a house filled with Mac stuff (1 iPad, 2 Macbook Pros, 2 Macbook Airs, 2 iPod Touches, 2 iPhone 5's, 1 Airport Extreme, 1 Airport Express, a closet full of old white Macs & an antiquated Mac Mini, etc.)

(978 posts)And Steve Jobs gave $200,000 over the years to Democrats vs $5,000 or $10,000 (can't recall exactly) to Republicans.
Im a liberal with a graphic design degree and have had Macs since the Mac Plus days. Our family has 4 Macs now. (Mac Pro, G4, iMac and a PowerBook) I wouldn't use any other platform for designing projects.
What these Conservatives don't know is, if it wasn't for the creativity of the Liberals, they wouldn't be have all the social media gadgets available to them. I see all these Conservatives with iPhones and think geez, do they even have a clue?
I just think Liberals are generally more creative the Conservatives. Conservatives are so insular.
I never owned a Subaru but we have an electric powered Ford Escort I converted and a Prius.

(1,289 posts)I have a shitload of macs. I'm a poor boy so I picked them up second hand. I have a 2006 intel iMac, 3 G5 dual processor Powermac towers. a dual processor G4 FW800 Powermac tower and the cutest little snow white G3 iMac from all the way back in 2001. They all work perfectly despite their age.
Yeah, they cost more when new, but they are built with real quality and they last a long time.

I'd probably like Subarus better if we had any need for 4WD down here in the tropics.
Is it the rural / urban / suburban split -- trucks make sense for red state country living; less in the cities and suburbs. Or are Republicans just more conservative when it comes to old school styling like Lincoln?

(9,808 posts)DH is all leg with iffy knees and finds the driving compartment of Soobies physically painful, otherwise we would have one.
We use android phones because we really don't like AT&T or Verizon, but most other machines are Mac.
However... There's another factor : we're affluent enough to have those choices. We don't have to rely on whatever's reliable down at the used car lot. (soobies don't show up on the used market as much; people keep them until they're dead) We have the leisure time to research our big ticket choices. We're not limited to the tigerdirect/amazon/bestbuy loss leader computer. I'm well aware of how lucky that makes us.

My hubbie, on the other hand, has a Windows PC and drives a 1978 El Camino.
May be a product of upbringing... My son & I are from southeast Florida, but hubbie is from Mississippi.

(49,212 posts)In the uber-liberal Bay Area it seems like every third car's a Prius, and Detroit gave Toyota a ten year head start before they offered something remotely comparable.
I'd guess that trend will start to change as domestic makes start to shed their reputation for making truly awful small cars. But that will take time. They made really, really bad small cars for decades, and a lot of people who were burned will be slow to risk their money on the promise of improvement.

(8,994 posts)The Camry hybrid is already made in the USA.
http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/toyota-prius-will-be-made-in-the-u-s-a/
It may have a Japanese badge, but the worlds most popular hybrid might soon be made in the good ole U.S. of A. Toyota is planning on making Priuses, specifically ones it wants to sell here, at an American plant. The company hopes this move will trim costs and increase availability of the hybrid hatchback.
Koei Saga, Toyotas senior managing officer in charge of drivetrain R&D, told Automotive News that Toyota is looking to start Prius production in the U.S. beginning in 2015. This will coincide with the launch of a new, fourth-generation model.
Building the Prius in the U.S. has a couple of advantages for Toyota. First, it will negate the effect of the strong yen; the unfavorable exchange rate makes cars that are built in Japan and sold in America less profitable. Toyota shifted most of its Camry production to the U.S. for the same reason.
A second advantage is volume; building Priuses in the market where they are sold could help meet what Toyota expects to be ravenous demand. By 2015, Toyota says it will be selling 200,000 Priuses a year. Toyota did not say whether Prius family members, like the Prius C and Prius V, were included in this estimate. In 2011, the last full year of recorded sales, 136,463 of the hybrids were sold in North America.

(8,994 posts)And I'm no fan of non-union labor, but how does this compare to the car being made in Japan and sold here? I'd think that would be fewer jobs for us.
I see it as the cup half-full.
GM and the rest of these places source a lot of car parts from outside the country.

(6,664 posts)It didn't make a profit for years; I don't know if it even does yet. Detroit had to pay for its own R&D and also fulfill customer demand for light trucks and SUVs. Makes a big difference.

(150 posts)I drive a Mercury Sable Premier built in Chicago and a Taurus built in Atlanta. Both by union workers. Buying Japanese, non-union cars is something I'd be embarrassed about. If Americans only bought American cars, Detroit would be an economic powerhouse and the recession would be over.
