"Perhaps I will never see Yuriy from Zhytomyr again, but, the weight of his words will stay with me"

Dec 20
On the train to Kyiv yesterday I sat with a soldier who had recovered from his injuries and was starting the journey back to the front. I just sat and listened for hours. Perhaps I will never see Yuriy from Zhytomyr again, but, the weight of his words will stay with me forever.

Lasting words: “It’s not Putin who scares me. It’s the Russian nation that found it easier to pick up guns and kill, torture, rape innocent people in Ukraine rather than build a better country for themselves back home.”

It goes back at least through the Tzarist rule to today.

Does anyone know of one or more good books on the subject.

I think he truly and literally beat it into the russian psyche.

also, russian still had serfdom as late as the 1850's. I think that also plays a giant roll.
