It's been over ten years here. Been in a lot of fights, some I've started, some not. Have stood up for my Union and my manufacturer every day i've been here. Came close to being rombstoned numerous times. But I watched the end of the domination of the Right from DU and nowhere else.
Been without power for 10 days. They are telling us maybe Sunday. Instead of trying to find a place to WATCH the momentous occasion Tuesday night, I tried to post from my car on my netbook driving around looking for a hot spot. Just so I could post here. Today I thought, why. Why did I allow myself to miss the victory we all worked and hoped for. (By the way I said he'd win big months ago, look it up). I'll never get that opportunity again. That pissed me off A LOT. I wanted to be here but I couldn't. 120 minutes on a charge doesn't work well when the election lasts till nearly midnight.
DU has changed. I hate the jury system with a passion. I miss our mods, some of the brightest, fairest, hardest working people I've ever known (love you Cbayer & NYCskip). I hate how the gun crowd has permeated DU. I hate how the anti-Union, anti-Buy American crowd has gained a BIG foothold. Hate, a strong word, but what's happening leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I KNOW there have been intruders here who have tried their worst to get elders tombstoned ( they succeeded a couple of times) and I KNOW they tried to disenchant us about the prospects of Obama's reelection. I know they tried to divide us. They fucking lost, here and in the election.
In the days since I've lost power I've spent very little time here. Except for news, I didn't have a need to stick around. That kinda sucks, but we all move on. I am sick, I work where I am not appreciated, and hopefully in three years I can get Medicare and go somewhere else. My eyesight in my remaining eye is weakening, and when I can't drive I lose work. And computers are my life. Along with Chevrolet's.
I KNOW there will be a bunch of 'don't let the door hit ya' comments, but I don't give a fuck. I survived Bush+ to see Obama become a two-term President, and in the end, I won. I've been here since 2001 actually. But it's break time.
To some very very good friends, I will be around, but you'll have to carry my torch for me. I am tired.
All my best
DB

(18,672 posts)Please! I've enjoyed your posts for 10 years, well, it seems like you've been here as long as or even longer than I have. I don't want the door to hit you on the way out. I don't want you to even open that door.

You have always fought the good fight...always and I suspect you always will.
Hang in there.

(12,799 posts)Time passes. I realized recently that my oldest granddaughter will be eligible to vote for the first time in the next presidential election. Our cause is just and the battle continues. We won this time, and that is good.
Recharge. Renew. Come back.

(54,256 posts)Yep, sometimes you need a break.
Take a knee.
For a while.
But come back.
I have.
You will.
We need you.
That's some seriously bad shit you're going through.
During Hurricane Ivan (the worst I've experienced on the gulf coast since 1993) we lost power for three days.
Your posts are one of the few that I automatically 'click' on.

(36,437 posts)Seriously.
Do what ya gotta do, but we need folks like you. been here 10 years plus myself, since before 9/11, though under different screen names. I usually do the whole "Don't let the door hitcha..." thing, but not in this case.
Keep on, brother.

(2,781 posts)you sound like a real, true blue DUer to me... hang in there, and I wish you the best.
But yes, I think I've already encountered the 'gun element' on here you speak of, which surprised me. But if any of them read this post, let me add this: while I don't like guns myself, and think they're at the root of all kinds of bad shit, I'm also not stupid or unrealistic. What that means is that I don't see any big changes whatsoever in 'gun control' ... I laugh at the right-wingers who constantly wring their hands about that, go buy more guns & ammo, blah blah. Why? Because in a country with tons of people with tons of guns, I don't think anyone could change it much even if they had a lot of power and wanted to. So I think it's a mostly-moot point.

(36,926 posts)Been here since 2002, when DU helped keep me sane after Dimwit was selected. I went through hell during the 2008 primaries as a Hillary supporter, and really thought that would be the end of me here. But, I'm still here, just not as connected as I used to be.
It's petty, but what really hacked me off recently was when my adorable walrus post was removed from GD, because it was supposedly Lounge stuff. That, despite the fact that every month we have a photo contest, with equally fluff content. For some reason those posts are allowed. Peeps LOVED that walrus picture and nobody could understand why they removed it. In the old days we were allowed to post feel good stuff in GD, because, after all, it is a GENERAL discussion forum.
Not the same DU, indeed.

(2,391 posts)Such a long break that I had forgotten my password and no longer had access to my old email account, so couldn't get into my old account here. So, I'm a brand new me!
Take as long as you need and enjoy yourself. Decompress. Believe me, it's worth it. It took until two months before this election for me to finally realize I was missing daily discussions of politics and just about everything else here.

(90,774 posts)I came back for this election, because it is pretty lively around here, after all. But other times that I lurked before then I always regretted it sooner or later, because of the very things you mention. The persistent undermining irrational hatred of President Obama was well tolerated here, and I think will be again now that the election is over. Friends of mine were disappeared.
You are making me reconsider my decision to return -- I now know where else I can go, including just walking away from the computer.
Same with you. Take a break. Your friends will miss you, but they and you will go on. I'm sure you've been told this before, but do give a look at Democrats for Progress: it is much more low-key than DU and you will find some old friends there too.
Other than that, be sure to take care of your health, Dain. Best of luck,
Hekate

I'll miss your posts, but you gotta take care of yourself.
DU has changed and it gets damn ugly around here as we all get tense and paranoid before an election and we really do get a lot of trolls about that time.
Please take care and please check in from time to time.

(10,942 posts)forced, I was deep into a business venture. Take some time off, go snow skiing, cross-country skiing or sledding if you live near snow. Chill out on the beach if you live in a sunny place near water. Go visit another country that you have wanted to visit or travel around the USA if you can afford those efforts. Good luck, we will keep a log warm for you.

(1,925 posts)And return to DU when things are more normalized for you....
It is just depressing to watch neighborhoods get power before power is finally restored to your own home...
I always enjoyed your posts as well... Take good care...

(53,410 posts)I stayed away from DU for months after Bush was 're-elected'. Go in peace, and after a while you might feel like returning because this place is educational if nothing else. It's a one stop location for all you crave to know about what's going on.

(13,297 posts)You'll get power back and hopefully be able to recharge all your batteries - computers and otherwise. A refresher is always a good thing and a break from DU sounds like just the thing you are after - so have at it, come back when it feels right and we'll see ya around.
Lots of folks around here will be keeping an eye out for ya!
