The way I understand it, the FBI was investigating Petraeus and that's how his affair came to light.
If nothing else Petraeus was exposing himself to potential blackmail and thus he became a national security liability.
The former Soviet Union and no doubt other nations had/have no qualms about using "honeypots" to obtain secret information, the Director of the CIA should know this better than anyone.

I believe you have the intelligence to understand I wasn't suggesting that every American's private life regarding adultery should be under the purview of the FBI but people in national security capacities should be.
My OP was clear, some people should be held to a higher standard, the Director of the nation's preeminent intelligence agency being one of them.
