Spending the weekend in Florida with the wife's 100% right-wing family. We're known as "the liberal pukes." I need to be among friends now.

(28,798 posts)report back. don't let them get you down.
i work with a right winger. well more than one, but anyway. this guy is one of my favorite people here, but he must watch fox and listen to glenn beck when he's not at work. so the other day the election came up and after he half-heartedly tried to assert that it was a close election, he said, "it really doesn't matter who won. this country's just too far gone." So i told him this joke my then-8-year-old son told me back in - what? 1992?:
Bush, Clinton and Perot are all on a plane and it crashes. Who survives?
my friend tries to figure it out. he goes, "well, that depends on..." and i just cut him off and told him the punch line.
"The country."
i think it comforted him somewhat.

(31,464 posts)Her parents, the barely-scraping-by retirees voting against their own interests...
Her sister and bil, the Southern Baptists whose house is decorated with bible verses. Except somehow, he is (was) an engineer at NASA. Science? Their three kids are, natch, also hard-core thumpers. One is actually a minister. The other just pumps out babies to home-school. I think she's up to six now.
Her brother -- another NASA scientist, specialized in rocket fuels and stuff -- who hates Obama because he shut down the space program (don't bother telling him Bush actually did that). His wife was a great friend of mine in high school, and she used to be cool. But she never bothered to leave Florida, and the Bush-love is strong down there. Her adult kids have also been well indoctrinated.
Her other brother is smart enough to NEVER show up for family functions. He was an IT guy at Disney World several years back, but now enjoys his retirement driving a school bus and doing wedding photography. I wish we were just visiting him. *sigh*
Is it time to start drinking?

(37,648 posts)Definitely not since the election. I'm a'feared!
I would most definitely NOT want to sit at a Thanksgiving table with them. Too soon after the election.
But Christmas is coming.

(26,109 posts)I'd be finding somewhere else to spend my time. But, who am I to talk? I'm in the doghouse house now with my right wing fundy in-laws. Probably be featured in the pre-dinner prayer.
