Last edited Wed Nov 21, 2012, 07:30 PM - Edit history (1)
Percent of Electorate is about to drop below 47.5% once CA and NY finish up counting... Leaving, for the History Books, Mr. Mittens with a 47% Average and President Barack Obama with a 51% Average ...........nice.
Oh, the irony. Looks as if Mitt Romney was right to single out 47 percent of the electorate, just not quite in the same way hed imagined.
As final vote tallies trickle in from straggler districts, Romney currently stands at 47.8 percent of the voteand analysts predict that New York and California will eventually take that number below 47.5 percent. If that happens, history will place the final 2012 presidential vote margin at 51 percent for Obama, 47 percent for Romney.
That would be a bitter final twist for Romney, who saw his position in the polls erode after a secretly recorded video caught him telling affluent donors that 47 percent of the country would never vote for him because they are victims dependent on government entitlements. He later disavowed the comments, but then seemed to revert to them after the election, when he told top donors that Obama took the election by giving gifts to women and minority groups.

(1,009 posts)Decimals with decimal part repeating are rational numbers.
The decimal expansion can be expressed as an integer fraction.
What fraction is 0.4747...?

(6,109 posts)Well, it's been a while since I took Jr. High math. I can do calculus, but I have forgotten how to do this. I seem to remember that there is a method...
It's all in a fog.
You're right! Slightly less than a half.
Thanks, friend, for setting my mind at ease.

(6,109 posts)with a Casio and take the inverse of numbers to try and calculate repeating decimals like .474747...
Anyway, it's obviously between 1/3 and 1/2. As close as I have gotten is 1/2.1062 and I have no idea how to convert that to a pure fraction with no decimal.

(1,009 posts)multiply the number 0.4747... by 100 to get 47.4747...
Subtract that from the original number: 47.4747... - 0.4747... to get 47.
So, 100*(0.4747...) - 0.4747... = 99 * (0.4747...) = 47, so 0.4747... = 47/99 a rational number (ratio of two integers).
Thanks. It has been a long while since I've done that. And I used to teach HS algebra and train top students for the SAT.
It's been years, though. If you don't use it, you lose it. It really is simple.
Thanks much.

(1,009 posts)if you used to teach HS algebra and you haven't used this for a while, you might want to wonder why we even teach this. I think it's not a very valuable bit of knowledge. I have PhD in math, so this knowledge is pretty much ingrained in me. But for most people who don't have a PhD in math, knowing this little trick is pretty much a waste of knowledge.

(17,656 posts)Never let the Republicans forget it.
Don't let the phrase "47%" drop out of the political vernacular.
Keep talking about other issues, but always add that "47%" of the American voters would support our idea about it right off of the bat.
When discussing Republican tactics, weave the phrase "47%" in to the discussion, any way we can, at the start, in the middle, or at the end.
Tag everything the Republicans say from now on with "47%".
