(17,294 posts)... when the Chinese ping-pong team (remember them?) visited Walden, he tried to compliment Chou by saying he really loved Chinese food, especially sukiyaki. When Chou replied that sukiyaki was Japanese, not Chinese, BD said "Chinese, Japanese, what's the difference?"

(4,643 posts)Although it is bad form to publicize one's self as an "Army Ranger" if you haven't served in a Ranger battalion or the Regiment, it is not incorrect or untrue. And an infantry officer in any capacity is not a REMF by anyone's definition.
The Salon article on Cotton's Army credentials was a terribly uninformed piece of journalism.
ArkansasDemocrat1
(1,450 posts)HE'S NOT A RANGER. He's a Rear Echelon Mother Fucker (REMF in Army Creole) who CLAIMS to be a "Ranger" in the common parlance that a Ranger is understood to be.
Mysterian
(4,643 posts)I served as a staff officer in Regimental HQ before I left the military, following two combat tours in the infantry. Anyone who earns a Ranger tab is a Ranger. RASP is primarily a course for enlisted personnel who go directly to a Ranger battalion out of basic training, but anyone E-5 and above is required to complete Ranger School if they want to stay in the battalion. There is no comparison between RASP and Ranger School. Ranger School is much more difficult physically and mentally.
Your understanding of "REMF" is incorrect. A REMF is someone assigned to a rear echelon specialty, such as a combat service support specialty. Anyone assigned in the infantry is not a REMF. In the infantry, everyone not in the infantry is considered a REMF.
Your statement "any officer can take the 2 month course" is ignorant, as was the article you lifted it from. Any person in the military, officer or enlisted, is eligible to go to Ranger School, go to SEAL training, or become a member of Delta Force. That doesn't mean you are accepted for the training. You must be selected for the training, which means maximum physical condition and a miltary need for you to receive the training. My informed estimate is 90% of officers who are accepted to Ranger School are infantry and Special Forces officers.
I despise the fact that an evil psycopath like Cotton wore the same uniform as I did. But screeching nonsensical slurs about his miltary credentials only proves one's ignorance of the military.
ArkansasDemocrat1
(1,450 posts)Cotton lets people think he completed the same or later version of that program that you did after you finished the 2 month courses - HE DIDN'T. He completed the coursework but didn't do the roadwork, cause he didn't qualify for it. You seem to be happy with that cause you keep insisting he's a Ranger, as the definition is commonly understood, just in the same way you call someone a Navy Seal
You're a Ranger. He's not. It's like saying he completed basic flight school, then fighter training and he's now calling himself a graduate of Top Gun or Red Flag when he didnt go to Pax River or Nellis
Great convos, hope to do it again sometime.

(1,450 posts)Nothing's like seeing a senator announce he's a racist POS on an international broadcast to reduce interest in the place by investors looking for an opportunity. NOTE to all investors, avoid Arkansas, your investment will maybe, MAYBE pay back itself with the tax breaks Grifterbee will give business. Doesn't mean you'll make decent bucks for your trouble. Our biggest area of growth right now is Dollar General.
You know, I can't remember ANYTHING positive these traitorous fucks have bought to my state since 2000. No new infrastructure or federal projects. Nothing. They traffik in fear, obstruction and bullshit only. Rep Womack must be scared, I see him advertising here.

(1,448 posts)Singapore literally uses racial classifications in its demographics. The largest is Chinese.
Singapore is multi-racial, like the US. Also, like the US, the indigenous population of Singapore, the Malay, is a minority.
Nobody would object to this line of questioning:
Senator: Mr. Trump, are you a member of the Russian government?
Trump: Of course not. I'm American. Some say the greatest American ever.
Senator [having established that Trump is American and should not be working in the interests of the Russians]: Mr. Trump, are you associated or affiliated with the Russian government?
Trump: I'm American.
And then we'd have threads on DU with memes mocking the senator with "Then why do your children look Russian" or "Then why do you look European".
Obviously the tik tok CEO did NOT answer the question about his affiliation with the Chinese Communist Party. He pointed out his nationality is Singaporean. He's relying on the ambiguity of these statements and the default ignorance of American progressives about the rest of the world to suggest the line of questioning is inherently unfounded and grounded in racism.
So we can all have a good laugh about how Tom Cotton is racist but we're letting Shou Zi Chow off the hook for his ties to Chinese government, an authoritarian regime adversarial to the United States.
