HD10: Lands 62%, Powell 38% — After Democrat special election blowout, Republicans asking 'what happened'?

One prominent GOP official said that national Democrats had nationalized this small campaign around abortion to scare Republicans in other states and help them fundraise off the issue.

One complaint was that the Republican nominee, Teddy Powell, took too much of a moderate approach and said that if Republicans were to win in purple districts, they must run as full-on Republicans, just as Lands ran as a full-on Democrat — even more so in a special election where turnout is smaller and only the parties' most loyal show up to vote.

However, the consultants did mention that this race would be a potential pick-up for Republicans in 2026 when the next gubernatorial election occurs, and more turnout will be expected.

Consultants told 1819 News that Democrats would use this nationally to sway federal elections. This has already begun, with a Twitter account linked to President Joe Biden's campaign team tweeting Tuesday night that this race sent a clear message to MAGA Republicans. They see this also being used in the upcoming battle between Republicans and Democrats in the second congressional district.

---------

As for elected officials, their biggest concern is that with Democrats now emboldened, the cost of their races will likely increase tremendously
. Several also mentioned how they feel that if Democrats try to make pushes in multiple areas, House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) and his campaign arm, run by Steve Raby, will be unable to assist all of them. 1819 News reached out to Ledbetter and did not receive a response as of publishing.

3. What happened? An election where voting rights were unsuppressed, apparently

Why do Republicans work so hard to deny some people their right to vote?

Because results like this could happen. THAT’S why.

This was a blkowout in a district Trump won easily. This is like a 30-40 point swing.

If a blue district in California that Biden had won easily in 2020 had flipped to GOP +25 and that GOP candidate ran on immigration and blaming Biden for it, it would have been a headline story for weeks and pundits would have talked endlessly about how this means doom for Biden and the Democratic Party this November.

People acting like this is a purple district are downplaying it. This district was redrawn to minimize Huntsville proper, it's more of a suburban and rural mixed district now. Trump won it by double digits. It's a red district that Lands lost by 7 points just 14 months ago.

8. More Democratic Party women who run on the Abortion issue for office...

Will win at the Local, State, and Federal levels.

For they are telling not only their stories with pregnancies that have gone wrong and thus made the painful decision, based on medical fact, to end them; but they are relating with women who were(are) in the same position at one time in their lives.

This is a rallying cry for women to VOTE in November. MAGA Republicans are powerless to stop them. For they know being Anti-Abortion, etc., is being ANTI-WOMAN.

14. Their problem is that they're not seeing what's in that mirror

They think the problem is that Democrats got out and voted and their people didn't. That's horseshit. This was a blood red district. The problem is their own people don't want what they're selling. They're so focused on tribalism they can't grok that. Their own people don't want Trump, which is why so many voted for DeSantis and Haley in Florida even though they've dropped out. Their own people don't want abortion banned and they sure as fuck don't want contraception banned. All the Dems are doing is pointing out what the Republicans have very openly said they are working for. And a lot of people who have thought of themselves as lifelong Republicans suddenly aren't feeling so Republican any more.

Even their own people aren't on board with this anti-woman, anti-sex wagon they're rolling out. And no matter what the issue is, they always seem to think the answer if something isn't working is to do the thing that isn't working MOAR.
