Our convention is four months out. Why need we worry about the DNC in Chicago when it's just easier to get better informed about presidential security than David Brooks or PBS News Hour would prefer. This post is derived from another thread re Brooks' PBS show, but this more accurate information bears repeating.
Remember, President Obama had a house IN Chicago during his first term, and returned home often enough for the City of Chicago, the Secret Service, FBI, Chicago PD, mayor and governor to have learned.
When President Joe Biden steps off Air Force 1, Obama with his own SS detail, and city and state leaders will be there in full force to greet him.
Our party chose Chicago over New York, Atlanta, and certainly Houston, because Chicago is the Midwests's Blue Wall for the Democratic Party.
Here is the general idea of the security plan. Chicago, being the nation's 2nd or 3rd largest city, will have law enforcement -- IL National Guard, FBI field people, the Cook Cty Sheriff Dept, IL Highway Patrol, and Chicago PD -- anywhere in its boundaries where operatives would want to create violent distractions.
Here's a neighborhood map of Chicago's United Center, site of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
Per the linked CBS report from 10 days ago, here are immediate area plans to know.
The people who live within this map are familiar with what's required of them when presidents and their party come to Chicago.
https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/chicago-dnc-security-plan/#textThe20Secret20Service20will20operateand20Ashland20to20the20east
The Secret Service will operate vehicle checkpoints and put up a gate at the United Center. The likely boundaries of the buffer zone are Maypole Avenue to the north, Jackson to the south, Leavitt to the west, and Ashland to the east.
Restrictions in the secure area include no guns, fireworks, bikes, scooters, tents and balloons. The city also said bicycles and dogs won't be allowed.
A Chicago police official said that policy is meant to protect residents from getting caught up in whatever demonstration activities will inevitably happen within the buffer zone.
CBS 2 asked people who work and live in the area what they think about the rules.
"So you think they're not even gonna let me use this field right here?" said Jawaan Jackson, a dog owner. "Alright, then it could be a slight inconvenience then if that's the case, for sure."...
DNC activities are also scheduled for McCormick Place, so a second city buffer zone will be established there. The anticipated boundaries are Cullerton Avenue to the north, 26th Street to the south, State to the west and just before DuSable Lake Shore Drive to the east.
The Chicago City Council approved an ordinance on Wednesday that allows Chicago police to create the security boundaries. The Secret Service said in a statement:
"The 2024 Democratic National Convention security plan is still being developed. The U.S. Secret Service, along with our local and federal partners, earlier this month went door-to-door contacting residents and businesses around the United Center and McCormick Place to gather community feedback that can be incorporated into the plan. A list of prohibited items has not been finalized. Specific maps that will include street closures, and parking restrictions are still evolving and will be released closer to the convention."
The Democratic National Convention will be held from Aug. 19 through Aug. 22.
Our president and party leaders will get national and international coverage! We are gonna kill it -- and the whole world will be watching!
Just to give an idea of the United Center's sound system -- our convention will be heard for a mile all around.

(36,238 posts)This is a sports neighborhood on the West Side. It's like asking how people who live near airports put up with them.
I wouldn't make the perfect the enemy of the good when it comes to at scale events like this.
Since Obama, Chicagoans are proudly innovative. They've got this.

(12,002 posts)The statement says all dogs in the zone are banned. Would I be required to board her somewhere else for the duration of the convention? Or go somewhere else with her until it is over. Either option might be expensive

(36,238 posts)Just commenting on the dog ban that was posted and how that would impact all dog owners in the zone.
Seems authoritarian and somewhat ridiculous.
ancianita
(36,238 posts)has there ever been a DNC convention in MI?
Sounds as if your "just commenting" on such an event's "dog owner impact" -- that it seems "somewhat ridiculous" to be limited by the security needs of this party's leaders and this president -- says more about you valuing your comfort than it does about real security needs for a national event looking authoritarian.
Something inconvenient isn't evidence of security precautions being authoritarian.

Have you seen Democrats in Chicago fight?

(36,238 posts)authoritarian power group. Pritzker is good friends with Gavin Newsom, and together, they're compelling leaders who act on good governance principles.
I miss living in IL with Pritzker as governor, being exiled down in FL with DeathSantis.

(49,075 posts)Everyone, except maybe some super-extremists or some provocateurs or some rogue cops, will be trying to avoid injuries and death. But it would not surprise me if there is violence that causes a death.

(49,075 posts)It's not easy keeping everything in mind, and to not go to a sports metaphor every time! Headlines are particular tricky since "brevity is the mint of style". I consult a thesaurus (online or book) a few times a week. Thanks for taking my suggestion in good nature.
I am reminded of Nathaniel Hawthorne saying "The greatest possible mint of style is to make the words absolutely disappear into the thought." Little hiccups like the visual imaginings that can be triggered in the reader can cause them to stumble momentarily and bring the words to the front interrupting style.
For headlines, Shakespeare wrote "Brevity is the soul of wit". Unfortunately, this post is evidence I haven't achieved Shakespearean levels.

(12,469 posts)'68 was described as a police riot. Cops are already brutalizing protestors at college campus encampments.

(15,033 posts)Thanks for all the descriptions. It sounds like with the reaching out to that area's residents they seem to be quite more concerned than Mayor Daley & Co ever was.
Chicago is one of 2 US cities that I still want to visit that I never have, though I"ve probably given up on Seattle.
(I have cities I'd like to revisit, too )
With the Obama's having lived there; I think they'd want to do them proud.
I won't (hopefully) visit until Obama's Presidential Library is completed, and open to the public. 👍

(70,393 posts)not that ive visited all of the competition, but ive traveled a fair amount. imho, it has everything nyc has w less of the bad shit. ie- we have alleys. they dont pick up the trash at 2 a.m.
a lot of ppl do live in apts, but i live in a hood w big yards. and its cheap, too, cuz its 1 of the most diverse hoods in the country. more brown ppl=lower housing prices. cuz systemic racism. le sigh. getting better, tho.
i think mke is to chgo as chgo is to nyc. its a nice little city, too. very much alike.
i wouldnt live anywhere else, w the exception of a small town in ireland.

(70,393 posts)pls remember 68 was a POLICE RIOT. this isnt 68. we just got a new citizen review board, and trust me, the mayor wd love to fire some bad cops. hes got much more important things to do w the millions we pay out annually to those thugs.
weve got this. watermelon isis is, indeed, trying to drum up a big protest. theyve already been told there will b no permits for demos inside the perimeter outlined here. theyll get a permit for elsewhere. probably at a lakefront park, or in the loop.
weve been hearing what about 68? since chgo was proposed as the site. every elected dem in.the.state has set their mind on it not being another 68. they have planned and planned to make sure there will not b another 68.
its not going to b another 68.
