The bodycam footage shows the officer handing Bray the traffic citation and a pen to sign. After Bray signs the ticket, he keeps the pen and drives off.
The officer is heard yelling after Bray to give him his pen back.
That mother (expletive). He stole my (expletive) pen! the officer shouted in the video obtained by WSB-TV.
-------
The officer unholsters his Taser and points it at Bray. Moments later, the officer Tasers Bray while a deputy forces him to the ground.
I cant feel my leg bro, Bray said as the deputy pinned him down.
Bray was arrested and taken into custody. Police charged him with obstruction and theft by taking.
---------
Bray told WSB-TV that his leg was broken in two places during the encounter and hes still experiencing pain nearly five months after the night of that traffic stop.

Greenville Police Chief Wayne Frazier told reporters he reviewed the body camera footage, claiming the officers did nothing wrong to Bray.
If he had complied, none of this would have happened, Frazier said in an email. Our SOP says verbal, hands-on, less lethal, and lethal, and he followed protocol."
An attorney representing Bray said his client plans on filing a lawsuit.

(2,193 posts)You think they actually need a valid excuse before doing violence to someone.
Besides, "did not comply" is often a manufactured excuse. Two or more officers will shout contradictory commands, making it impossible to comply withe everyone.
"Put your hands above your head/Don't move/Put your weapon on the ground!"
"He's not complying!"
[Tazing/baton beatdown/gunfire ensues, in no particular order]

That sums it up very well. Nothing more needs to be added.

(1,163 posts)Over a $1 pen? Not that the cop just could have gone on his merry way without hurting the man? You think it is rational if you take a pen that you need medical treatment?
Oopsie Daisy
(2,951 posts)Are you saying that disobeying lawful commands and fleeing before having been released is rational?
Please. Just stop. It's his own fault. He resisted and that's what happens when someone resists.

(6,612 posts)What was that guy supposed to do, being told to get his ID out, having warned them he had a legal carry gun, and then gets massacred, shot not once but many times. I don't know what I would have done. You can't refuse to show an ID like that. Cops scare the crap outta me. I was surprised the cop didn't shoot the girlfriend and the kid, too.

(3,502 posts)context, detail, and dialogue among that.
One might suppose there are many parents, such as the mother of Tyre Nichols who would perceive the assertion "That sums it up very well. Nothing more needs to be added" as both without merit and dangerously naive.

(21,212 posts)Felony pen stealing isn't a thing. Neither is stalking a person to their home. I hope the officer involved loses their qualified immunity and gets sued right along with the department and the city of Greenville.

(39 posts)He had driven away at the time that the cop was yelling and very likely either didn't notice or was really shook and just wanted to get out of there. Why is this sort of insane overreaction always justified by the higher ups?
I understand the need for compliance in a dangerous situation- the point, however, is supposed to be to DE-escalate, not to make it worse. And really, how goddamned broken are you that you need to hunt someone down because he accidentally took your fucking pen?

That in no way justified what follows.

(65,570 posts)Just chalk it up as a mistake, don't follow the guy, stop at 7-11 & get another pen, go back to station & ask for petty cash to cover the pen.
Nobody gets hurt.
It was just a ballpoint pen. What purpose is served by escalating this? Answer; there is none.
The cop had a rage event. Over a pen.

Too many people do not have the temperament to be a cop, unfortunately a lot of them get hired for the job.

It's like pavlov's dog response people have when the so-called "perpetrator" is black. "All he had to do is comply". That's what he did when he signed and accepted the fucking ticket.
If he didn't intend to take something given to him, then he didn't steal anything. What the fuck! I'm so sick of this shit. Too bad the money he's going to get comes from citizens and not the sick fucking cops who did this.

BUT that does not justify the subsequent behavior by the officer.

(6,612 posts)for which he did not get charged. The cops policy is to let people out close to midnight. They broke his leg in two places, then let him out at midnight in a downtown area with no transportation. I had to drive around looking for him, then when I found him, I drove him to an ER for treatment. My personal experiences with cops through family members has not been good. My brother was white, but he was 6'5", 250 something, so they were afraid of him. Breaking his leg seemed like a control method.
