Battery shortage halts Fisker's Karma production

1:27PM EST November 30. 2012 - Fisker Automotive, maker of an innovative plug-in electric car, has stopped production and will run out of new cars by next spring unless a buyer can be found for its battery supplier, A123 Systems, company officials tell USA TODAY.

Fisker CEO Tony Posawatz says that the automaker hopes to restart production at its contract builder in Finland once the bankruptcy court finds a buyer for A123. He says he has every belief that a buyer can be found and production resumed.

Fisker isn't the only automaker affected by A123's troubles. General Motors' electric version of its new Chevrolet Spark, introduced this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. A GM spokesman, Dave Barthmuss, says that the car is expected to stay on its production schedule.

Fisker, an Orange County, Calif., based startup automaker, was founded by Henrik Fisker, an auto designer. He hosted a swank party at the home of television personality Lisa Ling on Wednesday night in Santa Monica, Calif., as part of the auto show.
