The Atlantic Wire: By all accounts, the past month has been most difficult on Romneys wife, Ann, who friends said believed up until the end that ascending to the White House was their destiny. They said she has been crying in private and trying to get back to riding her horses.

He responded that he will definitely purchase at least one of each the cars you recommended, as soon as he has verified they are NOT manufactured in the United States.
He's also placed an order for a 6-pack of these:
?v=1343935922
Engine: 1,200 HP 8.0L W 16 (Quad Turbocharged)
MSRP: $2.4 million
The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is the fastest car of 2013. It achieves a face-melting top speed of 268 miles per hour, and outpaces its nearest competitor by over 50 miles per hour. It also outpaces its competitors in terms of price.
A princely sum sounds inadequate when talking about a $2.4 million automobile, but if you want to go faster than any other street-legal car ever produced that's what it will cost you, Brauer said The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is the current King of Speed, and many Veyron owners have king in their official title.
He indicated that he and Ann have always wanted to own a Volkswagen.

(10,153 posts)at least as far as Romney himself is concerned. If he thought he could get away with offshoring his money -which he seems to have - and donating only a pittance to non-LDS charities, buying a non-US-made car shouldn't affect him in the least.
BTW, as an Audi owner since 1998 (same one), they're good cars. I do wish he'd have gone with something else, though.

(13,616 posts)Why should he?
I hated Mitt as much as anyone, but the ugly fact is this: the Tea party was so successful that, even though hundreds of millions of dollars (That we KNOW of) were spent trying to prop him up, many GOP members would not vote for someone they saw as the "moderate Mormon from Massachusetts."
Even though Mitt pandered, nay, even though Mitt bent over backwards, they still hated him. Hell, you know that if he won, some people would be calling for an impeachment or assassination, just to put Paul Ryan in there, and Grover would make damn sure the right media people towed that line, as well as the Churches.
If I was Mitt, I would tell them all to go to Hell, why associate with a bunch of people that could spend a billion dollars and still lose every state not part of the Confederacy? \
Of course, I do not pity him. If he was able to have a life outside of his money and his church (which was an extension of that money) then maybe he would not be so bored. And we all know Annie wanted to be Queen, hell, wait until SHE runs...

(32,088 posts)She and her husband are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and by several accounts, probably over a billion dollars. She probably already has that kind of staff. What she doesn't have, and never will have, are the most prestigious address in the world, and everything else that goes with it. That's what she really wanted--and of what she thought she was entitled. Oops. Guess not.

(111,338 posts)finally jumped up and bit the Republcan leadership hard on their corpulent arses this time.
I think we owe a debt of gratitude to Neil Newhouse and Dean Chambers for convincing them that the election was a done deal because the polls were obviously wrong (with no shred of evidence of that) and to all the Mormon crazies who fed them the White Horse prophecy that one of the most evil predatory capitalists this country has been scourged with was already anointed by gawd to ascend to the presidency and make us all moral again. They all bought Romney's inevitability as president and none of them prepared for the contingency of his loss.
Not only did they wake up on the morning of November 7 and realize they'd been lied to and the polls were accurate, they'd also been abandoned by the gawd who was supposed to swoop down and save everybody's bacon.
There is some party soul searching going on and they're even questioning some of the social hogwash since women abandoned them in droves. Unfortunately, it still hasn't dawned on them that their economic philosophy has utterly failed in practice and has served only to maximize misery.
They will continue to point fingers and come up with bogus reasoning for their loss, of course, but the two lies they bought--that the polls were skewed and that the gawd who set the stars and planets into motion meddled in everyday human affairs--has shaken their faith in the workings of an orderly universe. It's a real crisis of faith for everyone in that party, whether they admit it or not.
It's the perfect time for Obama to break out that steamroll.

(12,400 posts)I know that patients with MS suffer greater emotional disturbances from any type of stress, and uncontrollable crying jags are a symptom. I would imagine that going through a campaign like that would be highly stressful to even the healthiest individual. I honestly felt sorry for her and resentful of him for dragging her through that. Having said this, it was their choice and probably prompted by his egotism which convinced her that they would win. But I can't really delight in her suffering, even with that knowledge, so I'd better walk over to the Obama house to do my celebrating.

(16,916 posts)I have no sympathy for her.
Warpy
(111,338 posts)because it was obvious she was counting on being able to swan around the Washington social circuit as First Lady. She was a totally willing participant in that campaign.
However, yes, the emotional lability that comes with MS likely made the campaign trail a pretty miserable proposition. I wouldn't wish that disease on anyone, not even her. Not even Cheney.
I think the loss was devastating to them both because everybody in the party hierarchy was convinced of the inevitability of a Romney win. They didn't emotionally prepare for the possibility of defeat.
GoCubsGo
(32,088 posts)She's the one who pushed him to run against Ted Kennedy. Yeah, she said "never again" after that race, but this is TWICE that she went back on that. I don't believe for a minute that meant any of it. She does not strike me as the kind of person who can be talked into doing something she doesn't want to do--even by her husband. Nope. I think she wanted her husband to be President as much as he did. Probably more, given her attitude.
As for taking delight in her suffering, I don't, because I really don't care enough about her to do that. But, I sure as hell don't feel sorry for her.

(1,417 posts)However, I would not say she was the poor victim who was blinded by his egotism. Her comments throughout the campaign screamed entitled woman who felt she and her husband were groomed for the White House and deserved to be there over the Obamas. Her saying that it was "our turn" really brought that home to me.

(20,226 posts)What confounds my mind is the state of shock. Were they not following the election at all? Did they not pay any attention to all the various neutral, nonpartisan sources - whether financial derivative predictions markets, London bookies or non-partisan political science number crunchers? If they had been paying only cursory attention - even with the most optimistic outlook - they would have known that they had a reasonable shot at winning - but all neutral indicators without exceptions saw Obama as having a definitive advantage. How could they have not known that?
