FDA Quietly Increases Radiation

From http://www.naturalnews.com/038255_radiation_meats_FDA.html :

Rather than actually take the time to address the root causes of meat and poultry contamination, which more often than not are a direct result of outrageously unsanitary factory farming practices (http://www.naturalnews.com/025716_antibiotic_animals_antibiotics.html), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has instead decided to simply up the doses of radiation that industrial food producers are allowed to blast on their filthy, contaminated meat products.

In the first new rule recently published in the Federal Register, the FDA specifies that "unrefrigerated uncooked meat" can now be irradiated right alongside refrigerated, frozen and cooked meat. And in the second new rule, the FDA increases the amount of ionizing radiation that can be applied to poultry products such as chicken by 50 percent, bumping the dosage up to 4.5 kilograys (kGy) of radiation from the previous 3.0 kGy.

You can view the two published rules here:
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-11-30/pdf/2012-28967.pdf

These two rules, which were enacted quietly and without any media fanfare (big surprise), come more than a decade after the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) first petitioned the FDA for their passage back in 1999. And in the years that followed, numerous consumer advocacy and food safety groups decried the proposals, warning that irradiation is dangerous.

I would point out that America is the poster child for needlessly excessive consumption, and for the pride you as a nation you've taken in that wastefulness for the last 50 or 60 years.

But yes, arses parked in front of tellies (with or without the involvement of Cheetos) will be (and arguably already is) the downfall of society: X-Factor, Got Tallent, Survivor, Big Brother, America's Wildest..., most extreme..., Jackass, AND FOX BLOODY NEWS.

It's all tossing Christians to the bloody lions for the modern era, and the nation/world laps it up whilst ignoring half a thousand Neros tuning up and finalising their play lists. Hell the flames are crackling, and you lot are on the 'phone' placing orders for even more distraction and noise.

Reality TV my burning arse. Shield me from reality TV is what the fuck it is and AMERICA CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF IT.

Also I HATE reality TV...cannot understand the attraction, but PLEASE continue with the bullshit. I think you hit every bullshit talking point about fat people and America.

They lap it up then rush out and have fist fights over the merchandising.

And what in my "screed" pray tell constitutes a personal or even oblique attack on you. FFS apart from that throw away line about cheetos there isn't a single statement that could even be construed as a reference to obesity.

Talking points they may be. Bullshit they are not. America DOES consume a massively disproportionate proportion of the world's resources. Americans on the whole do behave as if that disproportionate consumption is their God given right. And America has managed to build up quite a bully boy reputation over the last century.

And I'm guessing your choice of name says all that needs saying when it comes to the subject of Nuclear Energy. You know what you know, and facts needn't enter into the equation.

The emotive language ("their filthy, contaminated meat products&quot used in the articles quoted by OPer snot most definitely indicates that the publisher of Natural News is far more interested in pushing an agenda than actual truths.

America has a heavily industrialised food production sector, and a less than stellar track record in food safety, FIRST AND FOREMOST, because that is what the consumers demand. Lots and lots of really, really cheap. Quality and environmental benignity are very, very low on most peoples' lists of priority.

producers can use more intensive, dirtier practices & sell older food to the public shipped from longer distances. and that worries me a great deal because that weakens the integrity of the food supply.

I don't think irradiation in and of itself is harmful. But give the bastards that run meat producing plants the chance, and their facilities will look like something out of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle.

Granted, there are a lot of meat processing plants that need to clean themselves up, but irradiation in and of itself doesn't cause good food to become bad.

I'm really not sure why you're upset by this. Radiation is used to sterilize the meat, thus reducing the chance of food-borne illness.

And despite what B-movies say, meat exposed to radiation doesn't become radioactive itself.

It is perfectly harmless. Sadly scientifically ignorant idiots hear "gamma radiation" and they freak out, thinking it's the same thing as radioactivity.

Irradiating meat doesn't change the meat. It doesn't make it radioactive. It just kills the germs that can cause all sorts of health problems.

The meat itself is unaffected. Why would that be a bad thing? While it would be great if there were no disease-causing bacteria on meat, the fact is that there are. Irradiation kills bacteria.

Overstated, biased claims from naturalnews.com are overstated, biased claims. That's what they do.

The panic about irradiated food is just that - panic. It's a complete misunderstanding of the process, the result, and why it's important.

Every time some bunch of people gets E. coli from a batch of hamburger, I'm amazed at the fight against irradiation. Websites like naturalnews.com use this type of story as a deceptive practice. It's all designed to sell the crap that's advertised on the site. Feh!
