Lame-duck bill before Gov. Snyder could reopen private prison in Baldwin for Michigan inmates

LAKE COUNTY, MI A private prison near Baldwin that has sat largely vacant since 2005 could be reopened under a bill passed early Friday during a lame-duck session of the state Legislature.
The North Lake Correctional Facility in Webber Township, which is owned by the Florida-based Geo Group, could reopen to house Michigan inmates if Gov. Rick Snyder signs Senate Bill 878, which would open operation of the facility up for bids.
According to a summary by the Senate Fiscal Agency, the bill would allow the Michigan Dept. of Corrections to contract with any private prison operator who could demonstrate an annual cost savings of at least 5 percent.
