(11,619 posts)Mandatory registration in all states, and most especially at gun shows.
Make gun manufacturers liable for the mayhem. People who make things whose purpose is to kill other people should face substantial penalties when someone uses the weapon ot take a life.
Require licensing to own and operate a gun. Being caught without a license would be a felony.
Require legal, gun owning, citizens to register all guns (even collectibles) and buy insurance to pay for any mayhem caused by that gun.
Weapon's manufacturers are massive ugly corporations whose business is murder.

(17,064 posts)And we can hold cutlery makers responsible for stabbings. No need to stop there, lets hold the subway builder responsible for the guy who was shoved on the track and killed last week. Perhaps most important, lets hold the parents of mentally ill people responsible for the violent acts of their creation.
Holy freakin' schmidt, if you want some sensible effective gun controls, as I do, then that's not the way to open the dialog.

(3,333 posts)Make it a felony to possess them with mandatory minimums of many many years.
Give a one year grace period to turn in existing examples of these weapons to the FBI or local law enforcement.
Then, after the grace period ends, make examples of anybody idiiotic enough to hang onto the weapons.

(1,277 posts)Make it a federal crime to discharge a firearm in public during the commission of a crime and punishable by life in prison.
This circumvents the knuckle dragging GOP state legislarures who would never go that far on their own. It would not stop every true believer moonbat like Lanza and that shit stain in Aurora, but it would peel off some of the fringe nuts and domestic violence types.
No one law is going to solve this. It's going to take legislation and a will to change our culture.
