He's going off on the gun issue. Says he's been a libertarian on guns but now he's realized he's wrong. Says Friday changed everything. Washington's old way of doing business is wrong. 2nd amendment doesn't mean we can have any weapon we want.
Wow. Let's hope he's not alone in feeling this way.

(8,275 posts)As with all his arguements, he manages to bring in liberals into every issue.

(96,793 posts)And you have to admit that's an unusual stance for a libertarian.

(31,706 posts)I saw Joey covering his ass as being one who pushed for the repeal of the assault weapons ban and unrestricted access to guns. It's CYA all the way but I guess the fact he felt things changed is a positive step. Yet he's so far a voice in the right wing, gun culture wilderness.
Also I didn't hear a word out of him about the massive health problems this country faces...part of the healthcare crisis...where mental illness is still considered a personal failure rather than the disease it is. Yep...blame Hollywood or video games as though that's the catalyst...and avoid the massive health problems that virtually every one of these cold-blooded killers had. No...it's not just the guns...they make the killing so much easier.

(8,275 posts)exactly how he sounded to me.
Everything that comes out of his mouth is always fraught with "false equivalency"

(96,793 posts)He seemed very sincere to me. Talked about his own kids, including his son with Aspergers. Admitted he'd been rated perfect by NRA. Seemed ashamed of that.
And I can't stand the guy. I turned him on today expecting to hear some nonsense about civil liberties. I was genuinely shocked.

(31,706 posts)...now it might be a big one and I recognize from where he comes from politically and personally. I didn't get the impression he was shamed of his NRA voting record but used it to give some credibility to what he was saying. I, like you, was expecting spin...and when he first started talking I was impressed...it was genuine...you can see the anger and pain he surely feels. I'm grateful to see that there's a human being there...especially in light of him having his own young children.
When he started veering off on Hollywood and video games...that's where he lost me. Seemed like after he took his shot at the NRA he had to double back quickly and find some "librul" bastion to go after as well. Not a word about the serious mental health issues this country faces...years of neglect many families encounter as they didn't have insurance coverage...and the overall social stigmatism about deal with and treating young people who show signs of emotional and mental difficulties.
It's this type of parsing and having to play politics with this tragedy...like others...that will, unfortunately, lead to precious little being done as far as any serious gun control...the corporate media will chase after another bright shiny toy and we'll be back with yet another massacre, another school, another part of the country, more destroyed lives. Sorry for my being so negative here, but I've seen this sad show waaaaaaay too many times. It's good to see Joey move a little, but yesterday 31 pro-gun Senators avoided an invite to appear on Meet The Press...and that's where the real problem is. Joey may no longer value his NRA rating...but they sure do...

(2,638 posts)He was very sincere and it took a lot for him to change his stance. I cuss him most of the time but when he's right and sincere I have to support and applaud his stand.

(61,695 posts)Violent movies and videos, per se. He said that for some people already at risk, frequently viewing extreme, graphic violence movies or games can desensitize people, which I think is reasonable. I thought was a very worthwhile shift by him, the kind that can get other GOPers thinking again.

(1,675 posts)I thought I was listening to Keith Olberman for a second!!! He said some powerful things, and if he is being the mouthpiece for the Republican Party, then we may get some gun control!

(104 posts)Joe is normally an asshole and I don't like listening to him...but if he is coming out for gun control that is a good thing. Repubs will and should take that as a wake-up call that the winds of change are coming. I truly believe the only good to come out of this horrible incident will be the change to our gun control laws in some form. At this point any change is welcome.

(135,425 posts)He saw Lyin' Ryan running for Veep, and he saw HIMSELF in that sort of role...he needs to find a way back into the game, and bucking the "Let's Be Rip-Roaring Jerks" GOP tide is going to start looking VERY fashionable in the months and years ahead.

(390 posts)Who only manages to show empathy towards people when it resembles him or her. Where was Joe when Chicago parents were losing their children to gun violence?

(45,558 posts)It's easy to jump on board when it is safe but when you are asked to take a stand when it is tough, that is the measure of a person.
Joey is running for president and wants to recreate himself now that he is away from the right wing nuts he palled around with when he was in the House.

(15,667 posts)I get that there's this extra layer of tragedy that the kids are so little but is it really that much easier as a parent to lose a 16 y/o than a 6 y/o to senseless gun violence?
I've noticed about rw-ers in general it almost has to reflect THEIR situation for them to give a shit it's like they are empathy impared somehow.

(27,461 posts)he says he has been angling for Bloomberg's running mate as an independent in 2016, and that would require him to embrace gun control.
