They got hot cocoa for breakfast as well as hugs. And it was hard to let them walk out the door.

My son is 11. He was like, "whatever." Wouldn't let me hover. I guess you have to gauge their reactions and respond accordingly.

. . . by these criminals, it always ends up that the authorities knew or should have known of the shooter's severe mental problems. It is THEIR JOB to know who is severely mentally ill in their jurisdictions. It is THEIR JOB to ensure these mentally ill people are flagged in the NICS background check database. I am at the end of patience with the ineptness of these bureacrats. FIRE THEM! Replace them with people who care about innocent lives.

Go stroke your guns someplace else. Thanks to your "hobby" I got to have heart to heart talks with the kids about mortality this weekend.

I also work in the field of public service, and I have the same anxieties as OP. I wish the authorities would do a much better job at identifying and stopping these mentally ill people from becoming armed!

You came in at a strange angle with a low post count. While it came from a gungeon occupant and right now I find everything they say suspect -- the CT shooter was refused a purchase in the weeks prior to the shooting. Of course, that didn't stop him from getting a gun given that we have so many lying around thanks to our new national obsession.

Yes, his mom's guns should have been locked up. She bears some responsibility, for sure.

We have a lot of teachers in our neighborhood, and many of them have their own young children. Took my dog for a walk in the rain last night and just cried.

Have a GOOD day, proud2BlibKansan.

Especially if you have young students. They'll want explanations for something that can't be explained.

today they had them waiting inside. There were also police officers out in the parking lot. It was hard letting him go today- I gave him an extra big hug.

Brightest Blessings to the teachers and children returning to school today. Please know you are loved, that we carry you in our hearts, and we pray for your safety. May this day and every other be one of safety and joy.

My high school age daughter talked this weekend about the fact that there are kids in her high school that she thinks would or could act in random violence at her school. No kid, no parent, no teacher should be facing this stuff...
