Manchin: Time For Gun Control ‘Action’ After CT Shooting

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who has earned an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association, said Monday that "it's time to move beyond rhetoric" on gun control in the wake of the Newtown, Conn. shooting.

'(T)his has changed the dialogue, and it should move beyond dialogue. We need action," Manchin said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

Sen. Manchin: I Don’t Know Any Hunter Who Uses An Assault Weapon (VIDEO)

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who has earned an "A" rating from the National Rifle Associaton, said Monday that he wants to bring the powerful pro-gun lobby into the imminent discussion on gun control, indicating that he would be receptive to an assault weapons ban that Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said she would introduce.

"I don't know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle," Manchin said during an appearance on "Morning Joe." "I don't know anyone that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that need to be talked about."

I was feeling discouraged because the only senators and House Reps. who were coming out for specific measures were those who represented urban areas and had always been pro-gun control. Having someone like Manchin on board w/the assault weapons ban is big...he has credibility with gun owners and other senators supported by the NRA.

I'm shocked to see Joe Manchin on the right side of a social issue...I could not be more shocked if he admitted coal-mining is bad for the environment.

I guess he has this coming:

I think the GOP first told all the Senators to shut the fuck up over the weekend. Then they picked a relatively safe Senator to go out and test the waters before the rest jump in.

Most of the Senators who get high marks from the NRA are in collusion with each other. I think there's a few exceptions like Reid, but not many. I think the GOP made a deal with him that if he tested the waters and wasn't attacked by the sharks, they would follow. He's the obvious choice for such a thing. I think in the coming days we will see other senators cave on this. Feinstein has already said she's going to propose gun control legislation so it's not as if the GOP or the rest of the pro-gun Senators are going to be able to remain silent. They are absolutely going to have to declare a position on this soon. They absolutely need an exit strategy and I think Manchin is the key to that door.
That's just my take on it, but I'm always the optimist.
