(17 posts)Let's imagine if there was a guard with a gun in the Newtown School last Friday. Adam would not have cared and would not have been deterred. He would have just planned better and mowed down the guard with that high-power rifle with 100 rounds.

(19,877 posts)place Adam's mother would have had to hand over the assault rifle and high capacity magazines and the gun shops she legally purchased them would never have been allowed to sell such weapons. Yes, this tragedy could have been avoided.

(15,953 posts)Register all the guns and the magazines and tax them according to their killing capacity. High round magazines and assault weapons would be taxed at a higher rate than guns of lesser fire power. Gun Safes should be required for anyone who has a gun in the home. Yearly inspections in the home of the gun owner should be required for both safety and tax assessment. And last but not least all gun sales should be transferred through licensed firearms dealers.
And lets suppose a gun owner is facing a very large tax bill for the 1/2 dozen assault weapons and magazines he owns. He could then elect to surrender the gun and receive a tax credit worth the market value of the gun toward the taxes on his remaining guns.

If either a guard or the principal had shot Adam dead, they would have been held responsible. That mother of his would have sued the school and the people involved.

I'm right there with you, this line of thinking is a dead end and a distraction from real solutions.
