(6,960 posts)That's the reaction many of us here at DU have received when we call attention to the centrality of gun violence in popular culture and entertainment.
We're not for censorship.
But we aren't much better that the gun idolators/fetishists if we can't examine and be critical of the whole culture of violence in this country that revolves and obsesses with guns.

(6,960 posts)If one steps back even just a little bit and tries to objectively look at popular entertainment ... the glorification, obsession with and addiction to gun violence is just bizarre.
It is like we have adopted a 'cult of the gun' in this country.
We've always had it to some extent or another because of our 'frontier' heritage. But let's face it, since Vietnam the corporate entertainment industry has latched onto gun violence as a marketing tool with a vengeance ... undoubtedly because it sells.
So, firearms reform legislation is important, but in the long term we need to start changing the culture that approves of so much gun violence in games, movies, TV shows, music, art, etc.
And -- no censorship, of course -- it has to come from a genuine desire of Americans to begin thinking differently.
