I would support a national registry for all mental health patients

A persons name would be in the national registry if a licensed psychiatrist deemed that person unfit to own a firearm...

There would be an appeals process for people on the national list banning them from purchasing a firearm.

I believe every state requires testimony of at least two physicians, and the final decision can be made only by one judge or a panel of judges.

I would not support weakening that important legal protection.

We need to encourage mentally ill people to see treatment, not drive them away from it.

And at the same time, the state would pay for an evaluation by a different psychiatrist, and provide representation for the person.

Only then would I feel that due process has been met.

It literally gave me flashes of the Third Reich, as well as people put on the registry for things like being gay and black.

You do realize that sociopaths aren't mentally ill, and wouldn't be on that registry? Right?

With a licensed psychiatrist evaluating the circumstances and background of each and every person who wants to own a gun. And a mandated inventory of each gun owned. And a new eval, or an update of the previous eval, for each gun purchased. Edit to add: All costs to be borne by the person who wishes to be licensed and registered to own the firearm.

license and registration (and examination of psychological fitness) to own this sort of weaponry, must end. I can't kill someone with my car and get away with it--it's all in a database, they are coming to get me. And I can't drive without proving I understand all the laws and rules, without proving competence behind the wheel, without proving that I have the physical/sensory ability to drive.
