Green Christmas likely for most Canadians, forecaster says

Source: Canadian Press

Waking up to a winter wonderland on Christmas Day will be more of a dream than reality for many parts of the country, cautions Canada's top weather man.

... According to statistics the agency has kept since 1955, the chances of getting a white Christmas have been dropping across Canada year after year.

"We have this reputation. We are known as the Cold White North. But I don't think we're as cold and white as we once were," said Environment Canada's senior climatologist David Phillips.

"Our reputation is being undermined. Winter is not … what it used to be. It was more of a done deal. It was more of a guarantee."

But there are enough people that think Canada consists of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, which, from what I understand, are pretty green (my uncle in TO sent pictures. Green grass. In December. wtf) I'm not one of those people, since I'm not in those areas (hence the snow and cold, like you), just sayin'.

I remember one Thanksgiving there, seeing some homeless teens set up on some heat grate outside one of the hotels downtown there. It was so frigid, I honestly wondered how they could possible survive that weather.

In all fairness, they did mention the Prairies being the only area with guaranteed snow, but no mention at all of the territories.

By late December, "Lake effect snowfall" is usually the norm.

Before that the white stuff on the ground was mostly frost. This has been a very dry, very cold winter for us. Even now at 12:30 p.m., it's only -2. It's in the -40 range in the interior.

We typically have those temps here now, however today it's in the mid 40's.

Send some of that white stuff to Ohio, I'd like a dusting for the Holidays.

It's going to have to warm up first, though. When it's this cold here, it's always clear. It's the trade-off. When it's beautiful, it's too cold to stay out long, but when it warms up, it gets cloudy.
