President Barack Obama has been winning the public relations battle so far in his dispute with Republicans over the fiscal cliff, but the GOP will come out on top if theres a cliff dive, says syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer.
Perhaps the biggest area of disagreement between the two sides is over raising taxes on the wealthy. House Speaker John Boehner was willing to accept such an agreement, as insisted upon by Obama. But the Republican House conference rebelled against that idea last week.
As for the president, hes been using this, with ruthless skill to fracture and basically shatter the Republican opposition, Krauthammer told Fox News on Thursday. His objective from the very beginning was to break the will of the Republicans in the House and to create an internal civil war. Hes done that.
But Republicans should realize theyre playing from a position of strength Krauthammer says. "I think the Republicans will surely have a much stronger hand [if] we go over the cliff, assuming Obama stays very hardline and offers only humiliating conditions, he said.

(3,123 posts)What is interesting to me is the inept attitude the repukes are having. It's obvious they want us to go over the fiscal cliff and fuck up the economy AGAIN so they can blame the President. Guess what? Epic fail on them no matter what happens!
November 2014 can't come fast enough.

Good old republican personal responsibility shines through, once again.

(28,784 posts)because the American public most decidedly doesn't want them in power - the majority of Americans do not agree with the Republican Party. Only by fixing sure districts where they can get elected in regressive states - that's the only way they ever gain power.
Oh, that and disenfranchisement, fraud, lying and acts of treason.
so... why does Krauthammer of the gawds think it's a bad thing for Republicans to splinter into a million little pieces?
