Last night my local nooz

Mentioned in passing, what Biden's Commision is considering.

I guarantee that most people will not be happy.

For the momemt, on the table, a new assault weapons ban. (If anybody is surprised, this was a gimme...let's see how they do it)

The second, again a gimme, limit size of magazines.

The big one, if it makes it into law, will make a real difference, close the gun show loophole.

You can guarantee the NRA is making calls and threats as I type this. Of the three proposals the NRA will fight the last the hardest...they have, every time it is proposed.

I don't think people should be able to buy separate magazines. They should get the one that comes with the gun PERIOD. You can change a spent mag in 2 seconds, so whether it holds 10 or 30 rounds doesn't make much difference.

Precisely at that moment by an unarmed civilian. A limit on the ammo also makes sense.

But...of all the proposals closing the gun show loophole is the one that will have the most immediate effect. The other two, given the number out there, will take years to be felt.

12. Gun Show Loophole?

What is the Gun show loophole? I have been to many gun shows and you have to follow the same procedures as if you walked into a store to buy a gun.

40% of all sales do not undergo background checks.

But hey, I expect you to tell me this is not real.

Because what you are talking about is private sellers selling to other sellers, this doesn't have much to do with a gun show. I can get on websites today that are similar to craigslist for guns and purchase from a private seller.

All laws are in force at a gun show. All federal, state and local laws apply. A firearms dealer is required to do a background check when he sells a gun -- inside a gun show or outside a gun show.

An individual who is not in the business of selling guns is not required to (in most states) -- inside a gun show or outside a gun show.

No difference in the law inside a gun show, so there is no "gun show loophole."

What is the "gun show loophole"?

The Gun Control Act of 1968 requires anyone engaged in the business of selling guns to have a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and keep a record of their sales. However, this law does not cover all gun sellers. If a supplier is selling from his or her private collection and the principal objective is not to make a profit, the seller is not "engaged in the business" and is not required to have a license. Because they are unlicensed, these sellers are not required to keep records of sales and are not required to perform background checks on potential buyers, even those prohibited from purchasing guns by the Gun Control Act. The gun show loophole refers to the fact that prohibited purchasers can avoid required background checks by seeking out these unlicensed sellers at gun shows.

Which states have closed the gun show loophole?

Only six states (California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon and Rhode Island) require universal background checks on all firearm sales at gun shows, including sales by unlicensed dealers. Three more states (Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania) require background checks on all handgun sales made at gun shows. Eight other states (Hawaii, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Nebraska and North Carolina) require purchasers to obtain a permit and undergo a background check before buying a handgun. 33 states have taken no action whatsoever to close the gun show loophole.

In two states, voters themselves closed the loophole when their legislatures refused to do so. On November 7, 2000, the citizens of Colorado overwhelmingly voted 70% – 30% in favor of Amendment 22, closing the gun show loophole in their state. The referendum followed the tragic shooting at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999 (the guns used in the shooting were purchased from private sellers at Denver gun shows). In Oregon, voters also voted overwhelmingly, 62% – 38%, in favor of Measure 5, effectively closing the gun show loophole in their state.

Some states have already closed it, individually. You may live in one of them. Biden is talking federally.
