Why do THEY think Liberals are like chairs?

A: Because THEY are morons? (Yes, this is a small rant, and its about GUNS so be warned, and feel free to ignore.)

An old friend of mine has different views than mine on a variety of political topics. Since we've been talking about this stuff for over thirty years without a single "conversion moment" on either side, we aren't going to change each other's point of view, and we just recently decided to "let it go" - I have only "unfriended" an old friend on Facebook once (homophobe who outed herself over the Chik-fil-A crap), but "guns" caused a serious heart-to-heart between my "Libertarian friend" and I, in the "we need to stop responding to each other" because it was just getting too UGLY fashion.

So I can't respond on Facebook, but he posted one today that I *stupidly* clicked on:

(Don't click unless you want to be infuriated - I couldn't get past thirty seconds.)

"A Liberal Talks Gun Control"

The set up is this - "Liberal" makes a generic comment, and the "other guy" smacks them down with "unanswerable" logic.

LIBERAL: Guns are Too Dangerous.

OTHER GUY: Then why do gun owners feel safer for owning them?

LIBERAL: They are wrong. You are just as likely to shoot yourself as an intruder.

OTHER GUY: Not if you know the bullet comes out of the end with a hole in it.

REALLY? The answer to "guns are dangerous" is "the bullet comes out of the end with a hole in it?"

THREE THOUSAND (3,000!) children *KILLED* every year BY GUNS (http://www.iansa.org/news/2012/03/us-over-3000-children-killed-by-guns-every-year) and "the bullet comes out of the end with a hole in it?"

WHAT THE ... ???

I stopped watching when they began "discussing" the "Liberal" idea that "people should call the police" followed up by the comment that "criminals sometimes don't let you make phone calls".

REALLY? WHO KNEW!!! Good thing nearly TEN THOUSAND (10,000) people A YEAR aren't KILLING THEMSELVES with GUNS then, because CRIMINALS WON'T LET THEM MAKE PHONE CALLS!!!

Turns out there is a series of these "educational cartoons"; but they all have to pretend that "Liberals are Idiots" to work. It almost makes sense, in a rude, derogatory, infuriating way - if you actually pretend that a "Liberal" has a point, then you might have to help *FIX THE PROBLEM* which is why they prefer to talk to ... chairs.

It is this *attitude* I find particularly offensive. There is no compromise or real problem solving possible if the automatic response to a discussion is minimizing or automatically negating it with "clever" rhetoric.

I am a married woman, and if there is one thing marriage has taught me, it is this: if ONE PERSON isn't happy, BOTH PEOPLE need to WORK TOGETHER to FIX THE PROBLEM. Just because it "only bothers one person" doesn't mean it is okay to IGNORE THE PROBLEM.

Anytime I start having to discuss "people killed with guns" and the conversation involves the words "child" or "children", I HAVE A PROBLEM. Yes, it upsets me when ADULTS are killed/injured, but if we can't *ALL* agree that something needs to change after the events at Newtown, I am NOT GOING TO BE HAPPY.

I am a LIBERAL HUMAN BEING. I AM NOT A F*CK*NG CHAIR.

It's downright amazing how often gun advocates, as well as many who oppose liberals/progressives, use this type of argument (i.e. "Straw Man&quot . My favorite is "Guns don't kill people. People kill people." No one EVER said guns kill people, except those who wish to puts those words into the mouths of gun control advocates. They do as you did, they say, "People kill people with guns." http://www.reality-check-online.org/guns.htm
