Derp derp sandy hook shooter used handguns

This is the latest I'm hearing from gun fetishists. Somehow this is a big media conspiracy and the ar-15 was in the trunk the whole time.

According to Wikipedia, the ar-15 was used inside, a shotgun was in the trunk.

Far as I've heard, the ranges involved don't really make much of a difference between either weapon, it was all practically point blank. The only bonus for a rifle with a large magazine is more shots before roloading.

I just find this argument infuriating about as much as birther and truther nonsense. The only googling I could find on it not being an ar-15 goes to the usual nut sites and stormfront.

Anyone have the definitive word on this?

1. It is true that handguns are responsible for far more murders than assault riles

I support a assault weapons ban, but I think we are in even more desperate need of much more stringent handgun control.

And the Police chief describe the wounds and the use of a bushmaster. And the high yeiling magazine (30, I. Believe.) Would they make this kind of stuff up? I don't think so. At the time the only question was which he had used on his mother and self.

who would have to be lying about the bullet wounds, you have video clip of them recovering the 12 Ga. Saiga semiautomatic shotgun from the trunk. You can tell it is a shotgun because they clear the chamber, and it obviously a shotgun shell and not a .223 bullet. The Saiga is also a very dangerous weapon, and it looked like he had an extended magazine on it (10 shots??). With #4 buckshot you can put 270 deadly pellets in the air in a matter of seconds.

6. There was a lot of bad/inaccurate information

when the story first broke with conflicting information as the media rushed to be the first with any breaking news. While the final police report has yet to be released, at this point in time it does appear that an AR-15 rifle was the primary weapon.

Given that the police response time from when the first shot was fired to when the last shot was fired (when the murderer committed suicide) appears to be between 11-14 minutes, it didn't much matter which weapon was used as he would have had sufficient time to commit the murders with any of the guns he had with him.

As to conspiracy theories, I have seen both sides of the political spectrum believe in conspiracy theories that didn't, at least to my mind, pass the common sense test.

8. The coroner said that the seven bodies he autopsied were shot with AR-15

Or the Bushmaster. I think his exact words were "a long rifle".

Medical Examiner: Newtown Shooting Victims Suffered 'Devastating Set of Injuries'
Officials during a press conference shared some harrowing details of the mass killing at Sandy Hook Elementary School, including the nature of gunshot wounds.

By Davis Dunavin and Michael Dinan
December 15, 2012

"This probably is the worst I have seen or the worst that I know any of my colleagues having seen,” said Dr. H. Wayne Carver II of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where he’s been working for 31 years including 26 as chief.

Carver said he saw no difference in the pattern of shooting deaths between children and adults inside the school.

The weapon used primarily in the shootings was a long rifle, Carver said, and victims young and old were shot “all over” with some at close range and some not.

“I only did seven of the autopsies, the victims I had ranged from three to 11 wounds apiece and I only saw two of them with close range shooting,” Carver said.

11. I think the statement of state police that he used the Bushmaster was more authoritative

It wasn't clear from the coroner's statement whether he was referring to the victims on whom he personally had conducted the autopsies or to all of the autopsies performed.

And, while the coroner was judging by physical injuries, the state police evidence includes the weapons and shell casings found at the scene.

13. True - but I didn't see that press conference so it didn't stick

Like the medical examiner's press conference did. The ME was so grim, you could tell his was seriously affected by the autopsies he had to do on the seven little children.

Anyway, from all reputable sources, the Bushmaster was used on the school victims. Lanza shot himself with a hand gun - I haven't heard which one of the two he was known to have. He shot his mother four times with a shotgun, if I remember correctly. So the only handgun used was the one he used on himself.

10. There was a lot of bad info early on, but he used the AR-15

Given the time he had before the police got there, and the ranges involved, it didn't really matter which gun he used, but it was the AR-15 according to the coroner.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything I was missing on this.

It's like debating a Christian on whether the nation was expressly founded as a Christian nation. I've got all my facts in my books and they have their own facts in their own books and there's nothing left but the screaming.

was insisting this two weeks ago on Facebook, and I posted several links in response with the facts. One of the links was FOX, even.

Facts don't matter to these people. I truly think some of these people have a form of mental illness.
