On Giglio and Hagel
I admit to not having followed Giglio's career so I have no real idea to what extent he was guided by his horrible view of gays. But the real problem with Giglio is that he was invited as a religious figure so his religious views are the important thing. Thus he really had to go. His religious views are why we have Chuck Hagels. But the fact is that in isolation, Giglio is far less threatening to the rights of the average gay person. In theory, gays can have all their rights, live full lives, and be treated with respect even if significant portions of the population are in the thrall of religious theories that state we are morally inferior sinners who need to change in order to go to heaven. After all we live in a country that has codified separation of church and state. But given the way that one political party has been usurped by people enthralled by that religious theory, people the likes of Giglio, wind up being as dangerous as Hagel.
Hagel has apologized and isn't being hired to be Secretary of gay folk. But the next few months and years at the Pentagon will be very important for gays and lesbians. We will see the extent to which Hagel is still in the thrall of religious hucksters such as Giglio. At least Giglio is no longer representing our administration.
