Sometimes violence can only be met with superior violence.

In 1971, a man with mental problems held me at gunpoint (pistol inches from my forehead) for about an hour while he talked about the voices from another plane of existance that controlled him and told him what to do. Somehow, I stayed calm and listened to and talked with him, until he put the gun away and allowed me to leave. Then I trembled for three days afterwards. It is still vivid in my mind.

On the other hand, my wife was almost mugged a few years ago. He would not have listened to reason, but did listen to her .38's unspoken command, "Leave, now!" He ran away, no shots fired. I have posted the story many times here on DU.

And that will work every time!
Just like my family member that was killed and other family members wounded by an asshole that kicked the door down and started shooting. I really wish to god someone were there so they could have talked him into not hurting anyone. BULLSHIT the only way to defend yourself is with a gun in that situation there was NO fucking talking. That is the real world not internet.
