Aurora suspect James Holmes to enter plea in March after hearing delayed

Associated Press in Centennial
guardian.co.uk, Friday 11 January 2013 17.59 GMT

James Holmes, the man charged with the Colorado theater shooting, will not have to enter a plea until March, after the judge hearing the case delayed the arraignment on Friday.

District judge William Sylvester ruled Thursday night that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence to proceed with charges alleging that Holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a suburban Denver movie theater on July 20.

Holmes is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Holmes will not have to enter a plea until March 12 after the judge on Friday granted a defense motion to delay that proceeding.

I'm guessing his attorney(s) don't want him sentenced amid the social storm Holmes helped to create. HereSince1628 Jan 2013 #2

He appears to have something extremely wrong with his mind (and, note, I said, "appears" because I haven't interviewed him and I'm not a psychiatrist or psychologist).

With all the talk about access to mental health, wouldn't a more prudent move be to send him to a psychiatric ward before just dumping him in a prison where he's sure to founder?

FWIW, I'm not asking that he get off scott free or anything, just that I think it's more beneficial to him and society if he was heavily examined and treated. We could benefit from the information that might provide. So few of these killers fail to kill themselves in one of these shooting sprees that the study of one who survived might help us prevent more.

Just a thought.

When I heard this on the radio, I heard no reason was given for the delay.

The wheels of justice grind exceedingly slowly. Lots of respect for the accused, justice delayed for the families/friends of the victims.
